Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King Jr. led an incredible life. He dedicated his work to making life for minorities better. This page is a tribute to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King graduated from high school at the age of 15. From there he graduated from Morehouse College and attained him B.A. in 1948. From there Dr. King went attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he won the Plafaker for being an outstanding student. King returned to south to Montgomery, Alabama where he became a minister of a Baptist church. In 1953 he married Coretta Scott. In 1955, King organized the black boycott of segregated city bus lines. The Bus boycott was caused by Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat to a white person on a segregated city bus line. The Bus boycott was lead by Dr.King the boycott lasted for 385 days. The Supreme Court decided that the segregated bus lines were unconstitutional. Dr. King began to be recognized as a civil rights leader. King and other ministers from the south wanted to build an organization that fought against "Jim Crow" laws. The organization the ministers created was the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SLCL). With the SLCL King would help other communities set up there own protests. After the creation of the SLCL, Martin Luther King made a trip to India to meet with Gandhi followers; this is where he found the non violent protest was the way he wanted to approach “Jim Crow” laws. Dr. King then returned to Atlanta in 1958 to help the SLCL and publish his first book Stride Toward Freedom. In 1959 on a speaking tour, Dr. King was nearly killed by an assailant in Harlem. In 1960 Dr. King became his fathers co-pastor in Georgia. He was arrested later for protesting in Birmingham and for arguing that people have the right to disobey unjust laws. Later in Washington D.C. Dr. King delivered the famous I Have Dream speech to more 200,000 protestors. And finally in 1964 Congress the civil rights act that outlawed segregation in public accommodations and discrimination in education and employment. Also in that same year Dr. King is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Soon the SLCL marched for the right for Blacks to vote. In 1965 Congress passed the Voting Rights Act which allowed Negroes to vote. In the mid 60’s, Dr. King influence was decreasing, especially in the new generation. Dr. King then was focusing the resources of the SLCL to end Black poverty.Then sadly in 1968 Dr. King is assasinated in Memphis, Tennesse while helping Black garbage workers on strike. Nearly 20 years later a national holiday is proclaimed in Dr. Kings honor.
