If I Died

By: Drkdemon

Kagome had always known that Inu-Yasha was a very dear friend to her. She had also always known that she'd wished them to be more than friends. But no matter what she seemed to do or say, Inu-Yasha never treated as more then a friend. And most of the time, not even at that. He seemed to prefer squabbling to talking with her.

Kagome sighed and sagged back against the cushioned chair. Friend—or more or less—it didn't matter; she had no idea how he was going to react to this. Or any of the others, for that matter. A nurse walked into the waiting room, saying that her test results were back in. Kagome slowly got up and followed the nurse into the doctor's office, her mother by her side.

Wordlessly, the doctor handed Kagome the test results. Her eyes got wide.

It had all started a few weeks ago. Whether it was in the present day or the past, Kagome had begun to notice odd things about her health. She'd get bruises from the slightest bump, and they'd last for days or not go away at all. Her stamina hadn't been up to its norm, and she'd often catch herself breathing hard after having to run for even a short distance. She'd feel nauseous or dizzy for no good reason.

At first, the only one who'd noticed was Inu-Yasha, complaining about her inability to keep up with the others. Then Miroku and Shippô. Then her family, too. At first, everyone—including herself—had brushed it off as a mere cold; something that would go away on its own. But it didn't go away.

Inu-Yasha had also been the one who suggested gruffly that she go see a doctor. When she asked him why, he had simply replied, "you smell funny." Taking it more for an insult than advice, Kagome had ignored it. But it had gotten worse, and finally at the urging of her mother, she'd gone to the doctor's.

At first the doctor had thought it nothing much, just a cold or fever. He'd performed a test, just to make sure, he'd said. Probably nothing to worry about.

She'd been called back the next week.

Then, a series of more tests, each more extensive. Finally, they'd sent her to a hospital, to have a final few tests, to determine if they'd been right. Shippô and Miroku had been worried about her, and so had her family. Inu-Yasha hadn't seemed concerned, but Kagome had caught him a couple of times, watching her when he thought she was sleeping, or following her from a distance.

She had wondered how they would take the news that she'd had to have such an extensive test. Now, as she looked at the results, she wondered how they would take the results.

She had leukemia.

She had cancer.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Kagome held the paper in front of her face, which had gone as pale as a ghost’s.

"N-no..... no. Doctor, these results..... they are wrong. They are wrong. T-they must be wrong. It’s a mistake..... I can’t be sick. I can’t. I‘m not sick. I... can‘t... have these....." Kagome choked.

Mrs. Higurashi looked at the paper and gasped.

Kagome turned to look at her mother.

"Mother......" she whimpered. "Mom...... he’s.... he’s lying..... right?"

Mrs. Higurashi hugged her daughter.

"Kagome.... oh, Kagome....." and the mother and the daughter both started to cry. "How long, Doctor? How much longer does my daughter have?"

The doctor looked pitifully at the two, and said regretfully, "She still has about seven months. Hopefully more.... but.... we’re still not sure yet."

Kagome cried some more.

Her grandfather came up to the two and patted Kagome on the shoulder.

"Well, my dear.... who would’ve thunk..... you’re gonna die before me!!!!" he laughed.

*BONK!!!*

Kagome, who was crying, had hit her grandfather with a chair. "Grandpa!!!!!! You’re mean!!!!"

Meanwhile, he was lying on the ground. "O-o-ooowwwwwwww....."

"Anymore of that, Grandpa, and your wish won’t come true!!!!"

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Once Kagome and her family got home, she went straight to her room to think. Seven months. She had seven more months..... to do what?! There was nothing to do but dig a hole and lie there crying herself till she died. There was nothing else she could think of for the moment. So she cried. She sat down on the chair in front of her desk, and she cried.

Inu Yasha, who was sitting on the branch next to Kagome’s window had been eagerly waiting to hear the news of Kagome’s health. When Kagome and her family got home, they all had faces that told of nothing good. Kagome looked as if she was seeing an end to everything. Inu Yasha didn’t want to jump in front of them, so he waited until Kagome got into her room. What had surprised him was that she started to cry.

Inu Yasha didn’t know what to do. He felt as if he was broken by her crying, so he opened the window and went into her room. He put his hand on her shoulder and waited for her to realize.

Kagome looked up red eyed and found Inu Yasha there.

"So..... what happened?" Inu Yasha asked.

Kagome looked at him. He’s asking me..... about IT...... what.... what.... what should I say? Oh God.....

"Kagome? Is everything all right?" Inu Yasha asked.

Kagome got off of her chair to look at him.

"I-inu Yasha..... if.... I died, what would you do?"

"Hey! You’re not gonna kill yourself, are you?"

"No.... I won’t. But if I died.... what will you do?"

Inu Yasha shrugged. "I dunno...."

Kagome sighed and her shoulders sagged. "So.... you...." won’t care at all.....

"What’s this all about, Kagome? How do you feel?" Inu Yasha asked suspiciously.

"Uh... n-nothing...." she whispered.

Suddenly, Kagome’s mother came into the room.

"Uhh... Kagome? The doctor called again, saying that he has miscalculated something and wants us to go back to the hospital right away to- oh. Inu Yasha. You’re here? We are going to go to the hospital. Can you please come back another time? Come on, Kagome. Let’s go."

Kagome looked back to Inu Yasha as she left. Her eyes held something in it. Like an apology. She looked as if she was sorry.

Inu Yasha was curious about as what was happening to Kagome. Why won’t she tell me? Is it THAT bad? I.... yes. I’ll follow them. he thought.

When the family got to the hospital, Inu Yasha was listening through an opened window close to them.

The doctor came to them with a stricken expression on his face. He looked as if he was going to regret was he was going to say.

"Higurashi family, I am sorry. Kagome.... your life span is shorter.... much.... shorter....."

Kagome’s eyes widened, and then were blurred with tears.

"I.... I thought I had seven months..... It’s already..... too short with seven months..... please.... just say this is a dream, or a joke. Please. Don’t let me suffer like this.... please...." Kagome dropped to her knees and cried.

Mrs. Higurashi’s eyes watered with tears. "How much longer now? How much longer does she have? My Kagome..... how much?" she whispered.

The doctor closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "A..... month," he said softly.

Kagome cried. "No!!! No!!!"

Sota, who spoke up only now, was crying, "Sis.... sis... don’t cry. Please don’t cry."

Grandpa, who had lost the humor in it all, spoke softly, "Kagome.... Kagome.... it’s okay. It’s okay...." he kept saying soothingly.

Inu Yasha, who was looking in from the window, heard everything.

Kagome.... one more month.... of life?! But.... how? What happened? Inu Yasha stared at Kagome, who was crying on the floor. He suddenly felt as if he couldn’t stand it, and climbed into the window and went to Kagome.

"Kagome...." Inu Yasha said.

Kagome looked up and, again, found Inu Yasha.

"Inu.... Inu Yasha? ........ you.... heard?"

"Yes......."

"Ohh..... Inu Yasha......" Kagome cried some more, and she just sat on her knees. She couldn’t even get up.

Inu Yasha pulled her up, and he hugged her closely. "So, is this why.... you....?"

"Yes," Kagome sobbed.

Inu Yasha held her tightly. "Come on, Kagome. Let me take you somewhere." And he started to carry her somewhere.

"Inu Yasha!!! Kagome-" Mrs. Higurashi was about to say.

"I’ll bring her back," he yelled back to her, and continued to carry her to wherever he was going.

"Oh.... Kagome....." Sota whispered. "Inu Yasha..... please help her."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Kagome found herself going back into the well and to Feudal Japan. She was too devastated to even argue with Inu Yasha. She just sat in his arms and let him take her to wherever he was gonna take her.

Inu Yasha let Kagome down in the middle of a flower field.

"Kagome..." he started. "Why? Why didn’t you want to tell me?"

"I did. I asked about it to you...."

"But you said you weren’t gonna kill yourself."

"I’m not.... the stupid germs and whatever are."

"That’s not funny, Kagome."

"Does it matter?"

"Kagome...."

"Lemme alone..." she mumbled, and she laid down onto the flowers and started to doze off.

"Kagome.... so you don’t care if you die?"

Kagome’s eyes opened wide at what Inu Yasha said.

"I can’t believe you’d say that, Inu Yasha!!! After all I did!!!! After all I went through!!!! Everything!!! If I die, I will lose my family!!! I will lose EVERYTHING!!!" including you......

Inu Yasha was shocked at what she was saying. "Feh," he tried to cover up. "Are you that scared to die?"

"Is that why you brought me here?! To insult me?!?! I.... I...." Kagome looked as if she was going to burst. But instead, she sagged down. "Just.... let me go home...." she whispered.

"I did not force you to come, Kagome."

"Fine. I’ll just go."

"Fine! See if I care!!!"

"You don’t....." she whispered, and turned around to leave. Inu Yasha, though, with his keen ears, was able to hear what she said.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Almost one month has past.....

Kagome stayed at home for the rest of the month. She had really wanted to talk to Inu Yasha again, but was afraid to do so.

Around the end, Kagome felt as if she could hardly walk. Her family took her to the hospital, where she was going to spend the last few days of her life. She still carried on her neck the Shikon Shard, not wanting to let go of it until her last breath.

Her family and friends were there, including Hojo, even though there were only friends now. Kagome had made it clear to him a while ago.

After a few days, Kagome felt it coming. It was getting closer and closer. She had a hard time breathing, and she felt queasy all the time.

But, she didn’t know something. All this time, Inu Yasha, who couldn’t stay away, was watching Kagome the whole time. He wanted to go to her and stay with her for every last moment of her life.

Meanwhile, Kagome was starting to choke from not getting any air.

"H.... h.... help!!!" she yelled in a raspy voice. I-i-inu Yasha!!!! Why aren’t you here? Inu Yasha!!!!

"Kagome...." cried her mother. "Kagome.... a doctor is coming. A doctor is coming."

I don’t want a doctor! I want Inu Yasha!!! Where is Inu Yasha!!!! Where is he!!!!!! Inu Yasha!!!!!

Kagome tried to call his name out loud, but it only came out as a choke for air. Inu Yasha!!!!!! Please!!! Inu Yasha!!!! Please come!!!!!

Suddenly, Kagome stopped breathing all together.

The doctors came running in.

"15%!!! Clear!!!"

*bbbzzzzttt!!!!!*

Kagome still wasn’t breathing.

"20%!!! Clear!!!"

*BBBzzzzttt!!!!!*

Kagome’s body was still not moving.

"25%!!! Clear!!!"

*BBBZzzzttt!!!!!*

Nothing.

"50%!!! Clear!!!"

*BBBZZZZTTT!!*

Kagome..... was dead. Everybody in the room was crying. The doctors looked as if they had to leave right away.

Inu Yasha, from the window, couldn’t move. He didn’t do anything. He didn’t say anything. They had ended with an argument. That was how she was going to be remembered to him. Their last meeting ended in an argument.... like.... Kikyo. She was ‘alive’. Dead and alive. But..... no. Kikyo was not the one. Inu Yasha will free Onigumo from Naraku. And Kikyo will hopefully understand..... she was dead, like Onigumo, but, just like Onigumo, was also alive. Kagome..... she..... Inu Yasha couldn’t bear it. She couldn’t be dead. No. Not just yet..... but...... she was. And he needed to face that reality.

"KAGOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Inu Yasha cried. But nobody heard him. Kagome was gone. Kagome was dead. No. Kagome is dead. And she will be remembered, but not heard by from Inu Yasha.... for he is the reason. He will always be the reason, and he will remember, for the rest of his half-demonic life.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Kagome looked around. She was in light. No. That’s not right. She was surrounded by light. She looked around.

=Am.... am I.... dead?= she wondered. She looked at where she was. Nowhere, really, in particular. Just a place surrounded by light.

=Yes. You are.= somebody replied. Kagome turned around, and found a man talking to her. He looked a lot like Kagome. He had similar physical resemblances to her.

=F... father? Daddy? Daaaadddddddddddyyy!!!= Kagome went to hug him.

=Hello, Kagome.= he smiled.

=Daddy!!!! I’ve missed you!!!=

=Don’t worry, Kagome. I’ve missed you, too. But we are together now. We will be forever....=

Kagome stared at her father now. Here he was. The one part of her that was missing since she was young. And yet.....

=You are unhappy.= he finished her thought for her.

=Daddy.... I met somebody...= she started.

=Inu Yasha.....=

=Uhh.....= Kagome blushed at this.

=Kagome..... yes. You are not ready yet. Don’t worry. I’ll be waiting for you when you and the rest of them are ready. Someday, you, your mother, Sota, grandpa, me...... we’ll be together. We will. I promise.... but now..... somebody is waiting for you. Somebody special.=

=I am dead, Daddy....=

=Go back. Go back to where you came from. Now. Run. Before it is too late. Run. RUN!!!=

At the desperation of her father’s words, Kagome started running back. She ran the opposite way.

=I love you, Daddy.= she said her last words to him.

=I love you, too, Kagome...... my daughter. I’m so proud of you. So.... proud...= Kagome heard until her father’s words were out of range. She still ran.

Kagome continued to run. She ran, but saw that she was going nowhere at all. There was only light. Nowhere to go. No matter where she went, she would still be surrounded by light. Not her home. Suddenly, after thinking about home, she remembered Inu Yasha, and continued to run. She started to run faster, a desperate act to get back to Inu Yasha. And hopefully, into his arms.

Inu Yasha!!!!! she screamed in her head. Inu Yasha!!! I want to see Inu Yasha!!!! I want to see Inu Yasha!!!!!!!!! Inu Yasha!!!!!

=Inu Yasha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!= she screamed. =Inu Yashaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!=

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Back in the hospital, the doctors were about to move her corpse. Kagome’s corpse. Inu Yasha had jumped through the window and walked toward it.

All of Kagome’s friends had left to go outside because they couldn‘t bear seeing it. Only the family was there, and they saw him coming in and walking towards Kagome, and Inu Yasha just ignored the eyes. He continued to walk to Kagome. Kagome... he thought. You can’t leave me. This.... is not how it is supposed to end. You will wake, Kagome... won’t you? For me? Kagome? Please?

Inu Yasha got next to Kagome, and grasped her cold hand.

Suddenly, the Shikon Shard suddenly started to glow. The light was expanding, and it surrounded Kagome and Inu Yasha. Inu Yasha didn’t know what was happening, but he didn’t want to let go. He wanted to stay with Kagome.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Kagome didn’t know what was happening, but she felt as if somebody was warming her. The person’s touch was filling her with warmth.

=Inu Yasha...... INU YASHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!= Kagome screamed. =INU YASHA!!!! Let me see Inu Yasha!!!! Please!!!!!! Let me be with him!!!!! LET ME!!!!=

Suddenly, something from Kagome’s chest started to glow. It resembled the shape of the Shikon Shard.

=I-inu Yasha?= Suddenly, Kagome felt as if she was being sucked into a hole, and she was. She was being pulled into a portal. =Inu Yasha? A-are you there?= If this will lead her back to Inu Yasha, she’d go back now. Without another hesitation, Kagome let the portal suck her in.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Inu Yasha was still holding Kagome’s hand. Suddenly, that hand was filled with warmth and heat. Inu Yasha felt it. The body was revitalizing. There was heat. The light still surrounded the two, but Inu Yasha hardly saw it. He only saw Kagome, and saw how she was having color brought back to her face.

After a couple seconds, Kagome’s body was filled moving up and down from breathing, and the light faded away. The Shikon shard was still the same. It still had four souls, not three. Four. And it was still incomplete.

Inu Yasha waited a minute to make sure that it was real. To make sure Kagome was breathing. Up. Down. Up. Down. Her chest was moving.

"She’s alive!!! She’s alive!!!" he yelled. "Kagome!!! Kagome!!!"

Mrs. Higurashi got up from her chair and ran to where Kagome laid.

"Alive?!?!?!"

And there she was. Kagome. Lying there and breathing.

"Oh, dear Lord. She’s alive. She’s breathing.... DOCTOR!!!!"

"Kagome!!! Kagome!!!!" yelled Inu Yasha.

Kagome woke up with a jolt and started to cough.

"Kagome!! You’re alive!!!" yelled Inu Yasha.

"Ouch! My ear!!! Yes. I am alive! Don’t shout it!!!"

And before Kagome could object, Inu Yasha had grabbed her and kissed her hard on the lips. Kagome, not knowing what to do, just closed her eyes and kissed him back. After a minute, the two reluctantly let go.

"I’m..... back..." she whispered.

"Yes... you are..... and I’m so grateful...."

"I wanted to see you so badly. I wanted to see you.... I was so scared that I wouldn’t...."

"Me too. I thought you had left me...."

"There’s always Kikyo," she said coldy.

"No. Kikyo is not the one anymore.... she is..... gone. She belongs to somebody else. I’ve taken away her chains, and she can no longer chain me. I... belong to you..... I love you, Kagome."

Kagome was stunned by his words, and started to cry from happiness.

"I.... I love you too!!!" she sobbed.

"I love you more."

"No. I love you more," Kagome stopped crying.

"That’s not true, because I love you more."

"How’s that so? Mortals are more capable of love."

"That hurt!"

"But it’s true."

"No. I still love you more."

"Wrong. Me. I wanted to see you so badly I came back from the dead."

"So now you’re just like Kikyo...."

"BAKA!!! No!!! I am KAGOME!!! You.... you.... FOOL!!!! ALL THIS WAY AND YOU CALL ME KIKYO!!!! HOW COULD YOU!!!!"

"I.... WENCH!!! I DID NOT!!!!!"

"YES, YOU DID!!!!!! I recorded it and everything!!!!" Kagome took out a tape recorder and played it back: ‘So now you’re just like Kikyo....’

"SEE?!" she said.

"HEY!!!! WENCH!!!"

"What did you call me?!?!?"

"I was COMPARING!!!!"

"WWWWWAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! You called me KIKYO!!!!" she bawled.

"I... I.... stop crying!!!!!" he screamed from frustration.

"I’m not crying!!!!!"

Sota and grandpa stared at this.

"Uhh..... does this happen often, Sota?"

"I should ask you that, Gramps. With age comes wisdom. Do they?!"

"I.... let’s just leave them....." and the two went out of the room, leaving.....

"You’re so MEAN!!!!!"

"What about you, wench?!?!?!"

"DON’T CALL ME WENCH!!! SIT!!!!"
