    Shindo Hikaru is a small, but energenic Junior High student whose love of Go was akakened by the meeting with Fujiwara Sai. He has trouble being polite and sometimes acts rashly. Yet somehow he manages to come out on top. Though childish at first, Hikaru will rapidly mature through his various experiences.

Hikaru may be a poor student but his ability to memorize the postions of the stones is superb. Even before he knew much about Go, he was amazing those around him by releasing this ability.

<< Just starting Go, yet he could remember and recreate almost a whole game at his first Junior High Go Tournament.

Even at a young age, he had within him the desire to play his own Go. That desire creates a hand never seen before and bring shim a step closer to Touya Akira, the one whom he is chasing.

Even the genius Go player Sai is impressed with Hikaru's fresh and bold hand. >>

<< During the Young Lions Tournament, Hikaru transforms what seemed to be a mistake into a strong hand.

"Even if It's Impossible, I'm not Giving Up"

He says whatever comes to mind, sometimes getting Sai and his friends in trouble. But he is always looking forward. Is he loved by all because of that bright personality?

<< Even before he was part of Insei Class 1, he foolishly announced his intent to be in the Young Lions Tournament. At that point he wasn't good enough.

While playing internet Go with "Zelda," he asks Mitani's sister to type a bragging response. Yet he wasn't even the one who played. >>

Even against an opponent he likely can't beat, he won't remain quiet when insulted. "if not now then someday!" "I can't lose!" Those feelings will someday turn into real strength.

Upon his first meeting with the delinquent Kaga, he has no trouble insulting him without even knowing his story. Has he no fear? >>

<< Anger boils over when disrespected by Akira.

His kind side is seen when he takes Sai to various Go events. He must enjoy pleasing Sai.

He brings Sai, who is concerned only with Go, to a pro game, even though he stays only a little while. >>

Yet Hikaru can act just as selfishly. Without thinking about those around him, when he decides something, he does it. There may be times when he hurts those around him with these actions.

<< He doesn't feel guilty about using Sai for his own gain.

He ignores Akari's pleas to stay away and forces himself into the Go club he quit. >>

"What's with this kid? He comes to take the Insei Test without even knowing what a Kifu is? There must be a limit to ignorance. I'm really worried about his future ..."

<< Having been nominated to take the Insei Test, Hikaru refers to Ogata 9-Dan as "that guy."

Fujiwara no Sai

The Go Master That Surpasses

Time and Space

  Birthday || unknown

Height || unknown
Blood Type || unknown
Family || unknown

    Fujiwara no Sai is a genius Go player from the Heian Era. He was once the Go tutor for the Emperor but was thrown out of his service after an unfortunate incident. Still, he retained his desire to reach the Hand of God, and was reborn a 1000 years later in Shindo Hikaru.

In the Edo period, Sai appeared before a young Honinbo Shusaku. With his love and desire of Go, Shusaku accepted Sai and became a master of Go. That name is known even in modern times as the strongest player in history.

<< The name of Honinbo Shusaku (Sai) is recognized as the strongest player in modern day.

He has memorized every game he has played over the last 1000 years and never gets tired of trying to improve. He always holds the desire to find the stronger hand on the Go board.

Even former student Triple Crown holder Kadowaki is nothing against Sai's strength. >>

<< Sai finds interest in the new Komi rule that did not exist in Shusaku's era.

"I Want to Play, Hikaru!! Hikaru!!"

The reborn Sai can only be seen by Hikaru. The joy of playing Go is contrasted by the sadness of not being able to touch the modern world.

<< By living in Hikaru's mind, Sai can tell what he's thinking ... especially the bad ideas.

Sai feels the sadness of not being able to converse with an opponent in anything but Go. >>

Sai's life is all about Go. When it comes to Go he will beg, whine, anything to get what he wants. He can even get a little selfish towards the only person he can talk to, Hikaru.

"I want Touya Meijin's book!!" Sai screams. He won't let go of Hikaru until he agrees. >>

Go is a competition of the souls using stones. Those that use Go for personal gains cannot be forgiven. They will be taught a less through Go. So is Sai's philosophy.

<< Sai gets red with anger at the misuse of Go.

Sai gets angry after seeing Dake-san's cruel game against Mitani. >>

Sai lives within an unfeeling world of competition, but he is always kind and supporting towards children.

<< Even if the opponent can't hear, Sai shares a kind word.

Mitani accepts the difference in ability against Hikaru. Only Sai is there to experience the moment of admission >>
