Saber Marionettes J
Reviewed by: Shadowblade

I'll be honest, when I went to buy the first volume of this manga, I was attracted by the rather large breasts that the main characters boast. However, it is about much more than a nice sets of hooters. The main character's name is Mamiya, Otaru. Otaru is your average woman-loving, nosebleed-getting, hard-working, Japanese teenager. Except there are no women, he's chased by a flamboyant rich boy, all the work is done by marionettes, and technically he's from Japoness. Otaru lives on Terra 2, the planet that Earthlings migrated to because of overpopulation and pollution, and he's one of the few people without a Marionette. One day he finds a marionette of his own and promptly falls in love with her. After her two "sisters" are activated, they all become involved with each other. Can Otaru's taboo relationship last in a world with only men, rampent homosexuality, and an evil dictator bent on ruling the world? At first glance, Saber Marionettes J seems like someone looked at Chobits and decided that it wasn't racey enough, but that's not all, it seems to have a touch of Tenchi Muyo! as well. Marionettes are very similar to Chobits. While they don't seem to have anything to do with computers, they do have super-human abilities and carry out everyday tasks. I haven't had the priviledge to see the anime, so I can't provide any insight into that, but it does seem to have a little less fan-service than the manga. There is mild nudity, and all the jokes about sex that you can handle. This manga is definitely shounen, and not for the week hearted. There is a romance, however, it really seems to bring more depth to the story. Otaru is one of the few males who chooses to not be homosexual, and shows affection to marionettes as if they were people. This really weighs on the "maiden circuits"(the only part of human female emotion that exists on Terra 2) of the Saber dolls(the bad marrionettes with maiden curcuits), and his busty beauty, Bloodberry, excentric obsessive, Lime, and sadly flat chested house keeper, Cherry. The entire series only has five installments, but it is well worth the money. It'll keep you laughing and at the same time you'll empathize with the characters. Tokyopop publishes it, so get out there and check it out!
