Son_Goku Goku
Born from a rock in Gekai. Neither human nor youkai (demon). Is brought to Tenkai by Egan Gyouja and placed under Konzen's care by Kanzeon Bosatsu. Forms an immediate attachment to Konzen (he thinks Konzen's hair shines like the sun), Kenren, and Tenpou (whom he calls Ten-chan and Ken-nii-chan, respectively). Makes friends with Nataku, the only Tenkai dweller his age. Most striking feature: his golden eyes, which are said to bring either fortune or disaster.
Goku is very cheerful and earnest. He's just so cute and adorable! Look at that smile! He's very protective of his three older friends and would fight anyone who dares hurt/malign them. And his friendship with Nataku is so sweet. ^^ He's the first one to treat Nataku like a real person, not as a mere means to an end.
Goku is very strong --- he has extremely heavy shackles around his neck, wrists, and ankles, but he moves around with no problem at all.
Differences with Saiyuki counterpart, Son Goku:
Younger and much more adorable. (Don't get me wrong, I like the adolescent Goku, but being a bit older, he's developed some arrogance and brashness...but in an endearing way, of course. ^^) Truly an innocent child. Not hungry all the time. Doesn't bicker all the time with Kenren.

Konzen_Douji Konzen Douji
Kanzeon Bosatsu's nephew. Don't know what his exact job title is, but he does paperwork for his aunt/uncle/whatever. The type of person who never stops to smell the roses. Has a quick and sharp temper. Extremely bored with life in Tenkai until Goku arrives to make his life more lively. He and Goku get off on a bad start (the latter accidentally pulls out some of his long blond hair, which royally pisses Konzen off). Gives Goku his name...and nickname, "saru" (monkey). Is a reluctant guardian of Goku at first, but is starting to get the hang of it. As Kanzeon Bosatsu notes, he's starting to lighten up. Has been friends with Tenpou for a long time, and meets Kenren only recently. The Tenkai dwellers think he's weird.

Differences with Saiyuki counterpart, Genjo Sanzo:
Not trigger-happy. Doesn't smoke and drink. Less of a nihilist and a misanthrope.

Kenren_Taishou Kenren Taishou
Tenkai Seihougun Taishou (General of Heaven's Western Army). People say he's a better fighter than some of Tenkai's toushins. At first glance, looks like he's all brawn, but is actually quite smart. The people at the upper command are wary of him. He in turn doesn't like smooching with them. An individualist. Very brash and bold. Always does what he feels is right. Speaks up in front of everyone and says what no one else dared to say in public about Nataku, even when he knows he would be punished and make more enemies. Nataku is grateful for his offer of help, but Li Touten is less than pleased...
Smokes. Drinks a lot.
Differences with Saiyuki counterpart, Sha Gojyo:
Doesn't bicker all the time with Goku. Doesn't chase after women all the time.

Tenpou_Gensui Tenpou Gensui
Tenkai Seihougun Gensui (Marshal of Heaven's Western Army). Kenren's superior officer, but is currently acting as Kenren's adjutant. Unlike Kenren, he cares about his reputation (which is outstanding) and abides by the rules of good behavior when dealing with the upper command. Scholarly-looking. Affable and self-effacing (but of course he stands out nonetheless). Seemingly harmless on the outside, but can be a force to be reckoned with. Konzen thinks he's dangerous. Likes to read. His room is filled with books on a wide variety of subjects (he even has manga!).

Has a close relationship with Kenren. Li Touten even insinuates that there's something going on between them, with Kenren as the "danna" (husband/master). Tenpou, ever polite, says "shitsurei" (excuse me) before punching Li Touten in the face. (Though he's known more for his cunning and intelligence rather than his fighting skills, he is quite capable of kicking someone's ass. He's the Marshal of the Western Army, after all...) Tenpou's scary when he's pissed...he stays calm, but the expression on his face is really unnerving; it's scarier than going berserk.

Differences with Saiyuki counterpart, Cho Hakkai:
Smokes a lot (usually has a cigarette hanging from his mouth).

Nakaku_Taishi Nataku Taishi
Toushin Nataku Taishi (The War God Crown Prince Nataku). Killing is not allowed in Tenkai, but Nataku alone is allowed to slay. (We never get to see him in action, though.) Because of this, he carries a lot of responsibility, and thus has to act more mature for his age. He does have his mischievous streak (he drew nose hairs on Tentei's nostrils while he was sleeping), but compared to the bubbly Goku, his first real friend, Nataku really isn't a child anymore...

Behind his back, the dwellers of Tenkai call him "Satsujin Ningyou" (Killing Puppet). Nataku is aware of this, but being an obedient son, he always does what his father tells him to do. Li Touten told him before, "You were born only to kill. If you die, nobody will grieve." Nataku truly believes this. When he returns to Tenkai, badly injured, after defeating Gyuuma Ou, Goku informs him that what he believes in isn't true, because he (Goku) cares. Awww...

Finally! We're acquainted with the mysterious Nataku Taishi. I've been curious about him ever since I read Volume 1 of Saiyuki, but it turns out all he does in the main series is just sit there in a catatonic state. One of the reasons I like the Gaiden is that we actually get to know Nataku.

Kanzeon Kanzeon Bosatsu
Bodhisattva of Mercy and Salvation. Also known as Kannon. Irreverently called "kuso baba" (damn hag) by Konzen. Looks like a woman, but refers to her/him/itself as "ore" (macho male pronoun). (Well, those D-cup breasts sure are misleading... ^^;;;) I think Kannon's supposed to be genderless...

Assigns Konzen to look after Goku. Doesn't like to be bored; prefers things to be lively and interesting.

Li_Touten Li_Touten
Nataku's father. An ambitious and scheming man who desires to take over the Tentei's throne. Has arrived in his present position in the hierarchy of Tenkai all because of Nataku. Views his son as a mere means to an end and has raised (more like manipulated) him to be an always dutiful and obedient son. He's evil, but his dreadlocks are cool. Very rock star-esque. ^^ Even though he's the bad guy, he actually goes SD on one occasion, when Goku punches him in the face. ^^;;; How totally undignified for a budding Evil OverlordTM. No wonder he orders Nataku to kill Goku...

Goujun Goujun
Seikai Ryuu Ou (Dragon King of the Western Sea). A military elite from a toushin family. A superior officer of Kenren's. Still much of a mystery at this point...it's uncertain who he's going to side with in the future. He does get Kenren out of jail, though, and agrees with him regarding the whole Nataku thing, so maybe he'll side with our guys...

Jiroushin Jiroushin
Kanzeon Bosatsu's servant and constant companion. Always fretting about his master. (He's doing just that in the pic...)

Tentei Tentei
Heavenly King. The ruler of Tenkai. Kanzeon Bosatsu doesn't think very highly of him, though... ^^;;

Egan_Gyouja Egan Gyouja
Ascetic Egan. The person who brought Goku to Tenkai. He's looking very alarmed in the pic coz Goku just pissed Konzen off by pulling out a bunch of his long and silky blond hair...
