« Chapter 14 »

Nanako slept the better part of the afternoon away. She barely laid her head down on the pillow and she was out like a light. Setsuna had stayed with her, to make sure that she was really fine.

“Welcome back to the land of the living. You weren’t joking when you said you needed a nap, were you.” Sitting in a wicker chair found in Nanako’s room, she giggled as her groggy friend came to.

“Umm... How long was I out?” Rubbing her eyes, she stretchedand yawned.

“Let’s see, about 5 hours now.”

She was clearly surprised by this, and eyes still wide added, “Well, at least I feel better.” She put her hand behind her head and laughed.

She stopped suddenly and looked over at Setsuna. “You haven’t been here that whole time have you?”

“Yep. I didn’t believe you, so just to be sure, I decided to watch over you while you had your nap.”

“You know, you really didn’t have to do that. I was telling you the truth when I said I was fine. You really don’t have to worryabout me.”

Smiling warmly at her friend, she closed her eyes and leaned her head to one side. “I can’t help it. I’m always going to worry about you I guess,” and she gave a little shrug.

“Setsuna, I appreciate the gesture, but I don’t need to be babied. I hated it when I was a child, and I still don’t like it. Though I have to admit, I’m glad that you care.” Smiling, she could remember all those millennia alone, with no one to talk to, no one to care for her. It gave her a warm feeling having a friend that cared as much as Setsuna did.

“Fine, I’ll worry less when you start taking better care of yourself.”

Rolling her eyes, Nanako gave a sigh. “Yes mother.”

The two looked at each other and started laughing.

“I’d have to be the youngest mother in history then, to have you.”

“I bet I’d be the first child born before my mother then.”

“I never thought of that... Good point.”

With that, the two burst into a fit of laughter, stopping only when their sides started to hurt.

“I’m glad you feel better. Do you feel like a bite to eat? Dinner’s on me.”

“Oh no you don’t. Besides, I’m in the mood to cook something for myself for a change. Up to a torture test? I haven’t cooked in over 6000 years, so I may be a little rusty.” Smiling over at Setsuna, Nanako got up and walked over to her closet. She pulled out a pair of denims and a cute red tank top that read ‘Little Angel’ in glitter.

“Um... are you sure you want to risk it?” a grimace sprawled across her face.

“I’ll have you know I was a pretty good cook in my day. I’m sure I could still do it if I put my mind to it. Besides, we could always get some take-out if I really screw up.”

“Ok. What do you feel like then? Chinese or Pizza? Sushi’s good too. They all deliver.”

“Hey... Just give me a chance before you pick up the phone. I might just surprise you.”

Laughing, Setsuna picked herself up and started to leave the room to give Nanako some privacy. “Nanako, that’s all you ever do.” With a final smile, she left the room and went downstairs to the dining room, where she sat in the bay window, taking in the beauty of the scenery.

Not a minute later, Nanako came running down the stairs. “So what do you feel like? I’m sure I have something for any style of cuisine. So what will it be?”

“I see your getting a better grip on language now.”

“Of course. I have satellite now, and I find it easy to pick it up from watching TV. Which you can do while you wait. It’s in the living room.” She motioned to the next room, and turned towards the kitchen. “So, what’ll it be?”

Laughing at herself, Setsuna thought *I should have known better. From the looks of things, she’s got all the modern conveniences around her now. When she does something, she really goes all out. * “Surprise me.”

“Your choice. Make yourself comfortable anyways, I shouldn’t take too long, hopefully.” And with that, she disappeared into the kitchen.

Setsuna got up and went to the living room. She could see that Nanako had made a few additions since her last visit. Now there was an entertainment system set up in the living room, a big screen TV being its prominent point. A DVD player and VCR laid in the display case below, along with a few movies. On a desk were a computer, and a few manuals. *She doesn’t do anything small* she thought, as she sat on the comfortable couch, remote in hand. As she surfed through the channels, she could hear pots and pans clang in the kitchen, and something hitting the floor. She laughed quietly to herself, and mused at the mess Nanako must be making in there. Her own kitchen looked like a disaster area whenever she used it for more then eggs and toast.

Not twenty minutes later, Nanako poked her head around the wall and smiled warmly at Setsuna. “Dinner’s ready. Come and get it while it’s still warm.”

Setsuna was astonished when she looked in the dinning room. The table was set, and a bowl of salad lay in the middle of it. On each plate were two pieces of grilled chicken breast, and some steamed vegetables. “I’m impressed, it actually looks good.”

“Good, I’d say it looks great, and tastes great too. See, I told you I could do it.” A smile of triumph plastered on her face. Nanako couldn’t help but gloat a little.

“Ok... I must admit, if it tastes half as good as it looks, you’ve proven me wrong.”

Setsuna sat down and Nanako served her some of the salad. “Well just try it and find out. Nagisa taught me a while after I met her in the palace that day. I got pretty good at it too, if I do say so myself.”

Taking a bite, she had to admit it was good, and told Nanako so.

After supper, Setsuna offered to help with the dishes, and took her plate into the kitchen. Nanako tried to stop her, saying, “You really don’t have to. Please, Setsuna, sit down. I can clean up on my...” But it was too late. She followed her friend in, and laughed at the look on her face.

“Ok, so I remembered how to cook. I didn’t say that I was a neat cook though.”

That was an understatement. The kitchen looked like a total disaster area. *This is worse then when I cook! *. Sighing, she took a deep breath and turned to Nanako. “Well, we might as well start this, or else we’ll be here all night.”

“It’s not that bad,” she said in her defense.

“No, it’s worse then that.” Laughing, she could here Nanako trying to defend herself
