The Andromeda Sagas ~ Discovery Chapter 8

When she next awoke, Urei was in her room, surrounded by her family. She struggled to sit up, but her father pushed her back down into the pillows. "What happened?" she asked, as she gave up trying to sit up. "What was that?" she asked almost frantically. "It was the death of a planet," Kenmei said as she walked in carrying a pitcher and a glass of water. She handed the water to Junsui who reluctantly allowed Urei to sit up. "The death of a planet?" Urei repeated softly, "Where was it?"

"I don't know for sure," Kenmei admitted. "But I do know that it was not a planet of this galaxy. However, if it was close enough for both of us to feel it's death so powerfully, than it was not much farther than where A'Anaya once was." "A'Anaya? What is that? And what do you mean "once was"?" Urei asked weakly. Kage tried to muffle his laughter, but failed. Even incapacitated as she was, his sister never failed to fire off one question after another. Even the worried Junsui had to give a soft chuckle.

"A'Anaya was the outermost planet of the Andromeda galaxy," Kenmei said sadly,"but unfortunately it was destroyed by an evil being thirteen years ago, the same evil being who just destroyed this other planet, the same being who may head for Earth." Urei blinked in surprise. "Thirteen years ago," she whispered, her eyes wide. "Papa, do you remember when I was very young, I had those horrible nightmares? I remember waking up screaming, and crying, and I wouldn't go outside for days. They were so horrible. How long ago was that?" Junsui thought for a minute, then said,"I really don't remeber Urei, it was so long ago. But thirteen years does sound about right. You were so small, and I thought you were afraid of raiding parties after the War of the Lance." "No, the dreams were the same as the... the vision I had before I passed out," Urei said slowly, digesting what she had just said. "You were three years old when you saw A'Anaya die," Kenmei whispered, "You were so young, you awakened so early." "And then," Urei continued,"that boy showed up. Oh, what was his name? He just appeared one day, and he said he was looking for his people, that his home was destroyed. He was all alone. Do you remember, Papa, Kage, that he stayed with us for a while, and then he just left one day? Do you think he was from A'Anaya? What was his name, Kage?"

"What did he look like?" Kenmei interrupted quietly. "He," Urei began, then paused, squinting as she delved into her childhood memories. "He had pale green hair, but he looked like an elf. Except his ears were longer, and his eyes were a bit narrower. Oh, I remember now! His name was Fiore!" Kenmei gasped. "Fiore?" she repeated, "But we all thought he was dead!" "You know him Mother?" Kage asked, frowning. "Yes, Fiore was the crown prince of A'Anaya. I never met him, but I had heard of him from other Andromedan senshi. I wonder why he never came to the palace," Kenmei said mournfully. "And he was so young, too young to go off looking for survivors on his own. Only five years old." Everyone was silent, and all Urei could think about was the boy who had come to their house so many years ago, the boy who had made her forget about those horrible nightmares, the boy who had been her only friend, and who had left without a word, leaving only a short note for Urei only, written in a childish script, but written with great care. She remembered finding it and bringing it to Kage to read to her, because Urei had been too little to read it herself. "I wonder what happened to that note," Urei mused, feeling sleepy once again. Kenmei noticed her daughter nodding off and shooed Junsui and Kage out of the room. After closing the door partway, Kenmei seated herself at Urei's bedside and said softly, "I'm going to stay until you're well again. I had no idea that your powers had awakened already, especially when you were so young." Urei was nearly asleep when she heard Kenmei say gently,"Please, Urei, don't make up your mind so quickly. Think carefully, and when your decision is made, I will come back to hear it." Urei snored softly, pretending to sleep. She heard her mother get up and walk across the floor, closing the door behind her. Urei peeked to make sure she was gone, then opened her eyes and stared off into space. She sighed, remembering how happy her childhood was, and realizing how quickly things could change.
