Episode 48. The Black Lightning

Irvine is recovering from his injuries in bed, and nobody knows how to tell him that they can't fix his Command Wolf. Later, the Doc shows Van, Fiona, Moonbay, and Thomas the new Zoid he built, the Lightning Saix. It's a high-speed Zoid that was built with some ancient Zoidian technology that Dr. D managed to re-create. They then test the Lightning Saix in some exercises while Dr. D explains that the true extent of its abilities remain unknown because it's being powered down by a safety device, and Thomas remarks that its bare capabilities are not much different from a Command Wolf's. At the end of the test, the pilot loses consciousness and the Lightning Saix crashes into a cliff. Irvine goes to look at his Command Wolf and Van and the others find him there. He talks about everything he and his Zoid went through together, and then asks everyone to leave. Moonbay feels that Irvine will give up Zoid piloting now.

President Camford is traveling in the Presidential Hammerhead, which is then taken over by Hiltz, who shoots down all the other flying Zoids. Rudolf tells Van and the others that the Presidential Hammerhead has disappeared. Dr. D, Fiona, and Moonbay examine the damaged Lightning Saix, and Dr. D explains that the memory bank was damaged and that it will take months to reprogram it. Then, he gets the idea of using the Command Wolf's memory bank to save both of the damaged Zoids. Dr. D tells Irvine that if the Wolf's memory bank is transplanted into the Saix, then they will be able to save both Zoids. Irvine, of course, doesn't like the idea until Moonbay convinces him that maybe the Command Wolf wants this.

Thomas is looking for the lost Hammerhead when he sees someone on the ground who looks unconscious. It's Hiltz, who punches Thomas out when he tries to "help" him, and lets Ambient take control of the Dibison. Hiltz takes Thomas to the Hammerhead and then gets the President and leaves. Meanwhile, the Command Wolf's memory bank is being transplanted into the Lightning Saix. A group of Gun Snipers and a Dibison are coming towards where Rudolf is, and then open fire. The President, inside the Dibison, contacts Rudolf and tells him that the enemy's plan is to get rid of the leaders of both nations. They have no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, Van finds the lost Hammerhead and defuses a bomb in it.

The base where the Saix is is called to help out Rudolf, and Irvine gets into the Saix and takes off. The Zoid hasn't been tested yet to see if the Wolf's memory bank works, but Irvine plans to test it in real combat. Irvine pilots the Saix out to the battlefield, and manages to get the Wolf's data to work for the Saix. He easily shoots down all the Gun Snipers and avoids the Dibison's fire. Then the Dibison shoots at the ground, which blows up a lot of smoke, and tries to run off a cliff. Irvine uses the Saix's booster to get ahead of the Dibison and shoot it down before it hurt the President. Ambient ejects from the Dibison and flies back to Hiltz. Later, everyone talks about Irvine, the Lightning Saix, and the Command Wolf while Irvine and his new Zoid run in the sunset.

Quotes:

"Taking into the account the skills of the pilot, I'd have to say its bare capabilities are not much different from those of a Command Wolf." -Thomas Schubaltz
"And sometimes, if I ever came back from riding in some other Zoid, his controls would kind of fight me a little, like he was sulking! Isn't that weird?" -Irvine
"Maybe you didn't notice, but you're the one who's tied up and I'm the one who's free to do what I want, so stop making demands." -Hiltz
"It's a miracle!" -Dr. D
