Glossary

Ever been reading a fic, when suddenly you come across a word and you don't know what it means? Never fear, that's why I'm here! I've got a few emoticons that will pop up in my fanfics from time to time, as well as list of common fanfic terms. The Japanese list has been revised and edited, hopefully to give it a more accurate presentation. If there are any inaccuracies within the list, please notify me immediately. The last thing I want is to be offending Japanese speakers (of which I probably already have) and giving the wrong word to the wrong definition, or vice versa.

A/U: Alternate Universe. Story doesn't take place in the timeline of the anime/game/ect...
PWP: Plot? What plot? Story contains no plot.
Shonen-ai/yaoi: Guy love.
Yuri: Girl love.
Lemon: Graphic sexual scene. Always involves descriptive sex.
Lime: Never involves descriptive sex. May range from heavy kissing ("making out") to mention of sex and foreplay.
"Citrusy": Anything that doesn't fall under the category of "lime" but still involves heavy sexual situations.
Songfic: Story revolves around lyrics from a song.
Oneshot: One chapter story.
A/N: Short for author's note.
Author's note: Functions the same as in any published work.
Canon: Follows actual events in the storyline.
Crossover: Characters from other works appear in the same story together; usually focuses on this meeting.
Fluff: A romantic, sometimes silly, work.
RL: Real Life. Based on events in real life.
OC: Original Character
Smut: Sexually explicit fic with no plot.
Mary Sue: An OC that is used for the primary purpose of making a main character fall in love with this character. The OC is unbelivebly perfect. Male "Mary Sues" are much less common.

Angst: A fic where the characters are put through an emotional/physical "wringer", so to speak. Often end on a dramatically unhappy note.

Spoilers: Occurs with events in the game/anime that some people may not be aware of. It is considered good manners to warn people of spoilers.
WAFF: "Warm and fuzzy feeling". Similar to fluff.
WIP: Work in progress. Not yet complete.
X-over: Shorthand for crossover.
f/f: female slash.
m/m: male slash.
Slash: Fic that contains homosexual content. (Usu. applied to TV shows and movies rather than anime or games.)
UST: Unresolved Sexual Tension. The characters are obviously attracted to each other, but nothing concrete happens.
OOC: Out of Character. The character in question acts differently than he normally would in the given situation. A/Us are often OOC, because the author has removed the character from the original environment, placed them in another and now gets to interpret how the character will react. Also, humour fics are generally OOC.
