Episode 6: At the Grave Site

Felina stood chained up against a wall, her eyes were filled with tears. How could Matt have let her go like that? Why hadn’t he tried to save her?
Keekomon was nearby, on the floor. Her tail was chained to the wall, also. She was still knocked out from the digi-battle.
Suddenly, she heard voices in the hallway outside of the heavy wooden door.
“Good job, Zack. You have done well. I expect our visitor’s are awake?”
“The girl is, but her Digimon is still un-conches. She should be awake soon, though.”
“Good. Perhaps I’ll have a little chat with her.”
The door opened, and the boy walked in, but no one else was with him. Then a voice came from right in front of Felina.
“So, I’ve finally captured a Silver tagged DigiDestened, hm? I would have thought it harder to do…”
“Who…who are you?” Felina asked, lifting her head.
“I am the one who created the Dark DigiDestened Team. I will soon be the master of this world, so if I were you, I’d give into the darkness,” the person said.
“Who are you?!” Felina yelled.
The person stepped from the shadows. She was about ten, and had long black hair which was pulled into two tails at the bottom of her skull. She was in a black belly tank-top, and blue jeans. She was wearing a black cape, and her eyes were dark. It was hard to tell what color they were; black or gray. On her forehead was a black crescent moon with a black slash on the left and a white on the right. Beneath them were things that looked like fangs.
Felina’s eyes widened. “But, you can’t be her! You’re only a little girl!”
“Let me give you some advice; do not underestimate the power of darkness, or you shall die…” the girl laughed a high cold laugh.

Matt sat, crying. He had lost her. And any chance of being with her longer, and falling in love with her.

Tsunomon had gone back for the others, and would be back soon.
Matt dried his eyes on the back of his glove, but it did nothing to help him. He held in his other hand Felina’s ring of Sensibility.
When he heard foot falls behind him he stood up, and put the ring in his pocket.
“Where is she?” came Alana’s hard, and stone-like voice.
“She’s…gone,” he answered, no evidence of his crying in his voice.
“What do you mean by ‘gone’?” Val asked.
“They took her…”
“Who?” Tai asked, coming to his friends side.
“A boy and a Digimon.”
“The Digimon’s name was Ninjeriamon,” Tsunomon said. “If that helps any. And the boy had dark hair, like yours Nathan. And eyes like yours. He was in a green tank-top, and had on tan pants. He also had on a green over shirt with a ti—what do you humans call those big black and orange stripped cats?”
“Tigers?” Mimi asked.
“Yea, it had a tiger on the back.”
“Is the village this way?” Nathan asked, his eyes growing hard.
Matt nodded. “Yea.”
“Then, we should get there, and plan out our attack,” Nathan replied.
Alana nodded. “And, I’ll finish my bisness.”
Horkamon glanced up at her partner. “I’m coming with you this time.”
“No,” Alana said. “You are not coming with me this year, same as all the others. It’s my fault, therefore, I’ll take care of it.”
“What’s your fault? What do you mean?” Sora asked.
“Nothing,” Alana said sharply.
Sora winced. “Ok, sorry I asked.”
“We should get going,” Nathan said.
The group of thirteen set out for the village.

About twenty or so minutes later, the village was in sight. When they reached the gates, Alana broke off from the group, and ran into the forest.

“Where’s she going?” Tai asked.
“If you wait, we’ll explain,” Kyle said in an unusually kind tone.
Tai shrugged.

Alana ran through the forest on the path that she knew well. Past brooks, and boulders. Past a cliff side, over-looking a lake. Past a large tree, and down a steep hill. Then deeper into the woods…until she burst into a clearing.

The clearing was only about thirty to forty feet in circumference. In the center was a cherry tree, and all around the edge of the clearing were other trees that looked like aspens, and pines. More cherry trees were scattered here and there. A light breeze picked up, and some cherry blossoms floated across the clearing. The sun danced all around, playing tag with the shadows of the trees and plants. And a small brook laughed near by.
Alana walked toward the tree in the center, and saw the mound that was where the grave was. She collapsed at the foot of it, and read the rock at the head of the grave.

Sean ?

Born September ? – Earth time
Died December 12,
nine years later – Earth time

She bent her head in respect. “Sean, I’m back,” she whispered. “It’s been another year.”

She looked up at the sky. It was as blue as ever, and only a few clouds passed overhead.
“We met some other kids. Other humans…two of them are about five or six. Like we were when we came to this world. How are you? Your parents? I hope you’re all good and happy. Maybe one day, we can be together again,” she turned to look to the North. The pale moon of the DigiWorld was rising.
A wind picked up, as though it were the first breath of winter. The flowers nearby looked like they were icing. It felt like all was dying, and was going to leave the world to mar.
In the distance, Alana could have sworn she heard Sean’s laugh.
Alana suddenly collapsed onto the grave mound, and began to cry. Her chest and throat hurt, and so did her head.

I miss you so much…

Why did I let you die…?

I want to be with you again, and share our good times again…

An eagle seemed to sound in the distance, but it was only an Eaglelamon, flying overhead.

“I miss you so much, Sean…” Alana whispered. “I’m so sad all the time without you to cheer me up. The others say I’m too harsh, but…I can’t help it…”
She relaxed as a few more tears escaped down her face, and was silent for some time, thinking, and wishing.
“Felina and Keelamon were taken away. Someone took them, and now I fear they will also die. If that happens…oh Sean, what do I do now? You always knew what to do…Nathan misses your advice. Kyle is with me, and I do love him, but I think I loved you even more. Val is the same ditz as she’s always been. Justin’s still who he used to be. I think he’s the only one who hasn’t been effected by this world. Even Val has been acting more sour.”
Alana closed her eyes, and imagined Sean and Mimicmon near by, watching. She was able to ‘see’ every detail of each person. Sean was still nine, but then as he began to walk toward her in her mind, he grew older, until he was beside her and the same age as she was. Mimicmon was with him.
Tears began to flow down her cheeks again as in her mind, he knelt beside her, and held her, telling her she would be ok, and what to do.
She felt an almost ticklish feeling between her eyes as she cried.
“I’m so torn up inside…please heal me, Sean…” she whispered. “Please help me…”

“Where’s Alana?” Sora asked as night began to fall. “I’m getting worried.”

“Why?” Justin asked as he put more sticks in the fire he’d rigged. “You don’t even know who she is, let alone where.”
“So?”
<'Sometimes when she goes there, she’ll stay there for a full night,'> a Bladeramon nearby said in the native mind-speech of their type of Digimon. She turned to the pale moon.
Horkamon nodded. “It’s so sad that she won’t let the past be the past.”
“But, where is she?” Kari asked.
“That’s right. You said you’d tell us,” Mimi said, looking at Kyle.
“Felina told you, didn’t she, Matt?” Kyle asked.
The blond haired boy nodded. “Yea.”
Val sighed. “I’ll tell them the way that she wrote it.”
“You mean you have her journal?” Nathan asked, raising his head.
Val nodded. “She told me to keep it safe when she didn’t need it.”
“Ok, so tell us. Where is Alana?” Jessica asked.
Val sighed, than began. “There used to be seven of us,” she read from the small notebook that she had gotten from her pocket. “It was four years ago, and it’s told by Felina. Matt, you may have heard it this way, too. She had it memorized. So, here we go…

Val repeated what Felina told Matt earlier that day…

“Then she wrote as an epilogue; ‘That was when she became so cold toward the other people in our group. She had buried her computer with him, and told him that now he would be able to return home. It was probably the saddest day of all our lives, seeing the way that his death had changed her, and the way that it effected us.’” Val finished.

The group was silent for a long time.
“She told it to you like that?” Jessica asked in shock looking at Matt.
Matt nodded. “Yea.”
“So, that’s where she is…” Kari said. “She’s paying her respects to that boy.”
Val nodded grimly. “Yup. She goes back every year on our rounds. She’s a day late this time though.”
“Because you ran into us and those other Digimon?” T.K. asked.
Val nodded.
Izzy closed his eyes, and seemed to be thinking. “So, she buried her laptop and told him he could go home,” he opened them. “That was extremely noble.”
“No, not noble. It was something she had to do,” Kyle said.
All the Digimon were still silent.
“I’m going to look for her,” Horkamon said at last. “I know she’s usually there all night, but she needs someone to be with her right now. And, no Kyle, you can’t come. It may just make things worse.”
“But, you’re our ticket to staying here, aren’t you?” Joe asked.
Horkamon shook her bladed head. “No, now that the Bladeramon know your not harmful, they’ll let you stay.”
Shantamon glanced at Jessica, but said nothing. He knew that they were only there to spy, but he and she could get rid of them for their master.
Jessica gave off a shallow shake of her head. One that no one seemed to notice.
Horkamon sighed. “I hope to be back soon. Do as the Bladeramon ask, and everything will work out fine.” She walked over to the Bladeramon guard, and stated what she was doing, and that the others wouldn’t be any trouble.
The Digimon said something, but no one else heard it because it was directed at Horkamon. She then opened the gates for the Rookie.
Horkamon ran out, without a look back at the group.

Alana lay at the grave, not even aware that it was already night. She was still imagining Sean and Mimicmon beside her.

She blinked, and a lone tear rolled down her face and landed on the dirt of the grave.
Why does it hurt so much? And why couldn’t I have healed him? I have the power, don’t I? Was I just too stupid to do it? And now, he’s dead. I had a chance to save him, and he’s dead…I thought I had the power…maybe I don’t…
The sound of underbrush crunching didn’t make Alana realize she was being watched. Suddenly, Horkamon entered the clearing.
“Alana?” she asked, her voice low.
Alana didn’t hear Horkamon.
Horkamon edged closer. “Alana? Please talk to me…”
“Sean…I miss you…” Alana whispered, not even acknowledging that Horkamon was near her.
“Alana, let the past be…” Horkamon said walking up to her friends side.
Alana didn’t answer. She just curled into a ball, and closed her eyes.
Why won’t she let his memory go? She misses him, just like the rest of us…but she won’t forgive herself for something that happened almost five years ago…she didn’t even kill him…Tigeriamon did. But, still…
“Horkamon,” Alana said suddenly.
“Huh?”
“I have the power to heal, don’t I?”
Horkamon had a saddened look on her face. “Yes, Alana. You do.”
“Then why couldn’t I heal him?”
The question struck Horkamon off guard. Her eyes widened slightly as she asked herself, Is that why she won’t forgive herself?! Just because she wasn’t able to heal him?! “Is…that why you’re still so sad?” Horkamon asked.
Alana nodded. “Yes,” a tear slid down her face. “That’s what the last part of my Crest means, isn’t it? Healing?”
Horkamon lowered her head, then nodded. “Yes, it is.”
“Then why? Why couldn’t I heal him?”
“I don’t know…maybe he was already healed.”
“What do you mean?” Alana questioned.
Horkamon placed a hand on her friends shoulder. “Maybe he wanted to die, so he could go home at last.”
Alana was silent for a moment, then said, “Is that where we go? After we die here?”
“If you’re a Digimon, you get reborn in Primary Village. But, I don’t know what happens if you’re a human. Is there a place on Earth that humans get reborn? Like a village?”
Alana shook her head, and smiled slightly. Then she said, “Horkamon, can we go there? Just the two of us? I want to see Mimicmon again…”
“Alana, it’s been almost five years. He won’t be there anymore.”
“But, maybe Electmon knows where he is…”
Horkamon closed her eyes, then nodded as a silver tear slid down her face. “It would be nice to see him again…” she opened her eyes. They were glazed over with tears, and the pale moon was reflected in them.
The scene faded into black as silver moon light danced around the shadows of the trees.
A lone sad tune played upon the breeze, reliving that afternoon...
