They are rescued by a handsome young man named Tamahome. Both Miaka and Yui fall in love with him instantly. All of a sudden Yui disappears and is transported back to modern Tokyo, leaving poor Miaka stuck in this strange land. Soon after Miaka finds out that she has been chosen to be the Suzaku no Miko. She has seven celestial warriors-Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko. Miaka must find all of the seven celestial warriors, and then summon Suzaku to save the Hotohoris Empire. During Miakas stay in the country Miaka and Tamahome fall in love, but Hotohori falls in love with Miaka as well.
Miaka soon finds another of the celestial warriors, Nuriko. Nuriko is a cross dresser who is in love with the emperor Hotohori. Miaka then starts to miss home so both Hotohori and Tamahome let Miaka go back. When Miaka was returning home, Yui got sent into the other world. When Yui was brought into the world she was told by a man named Nakago that she was raped by some street thugs and that it was Miakas fault for not coming back to save her in time. Miaka spent quite a while in her home world searching for Yui.
Once Miaka realizes that she was taken into the book world, and she has to go save her. Miaka finds out that three months have passed in the book world and that during this time her best friend has had a hard three months.
Yui begins to hate Miaka. Due to the fact that Yui believes that Miaka was the reason for her suffering and Yui is also jealous that Tamahome loves Miaka, Yui wants to kill Miaka. Yui then becomes the Seiryuu no Miko...the sworn enemy of the Suzaku no Miko and now Miaka as well.
Yui gathers her seven seiryuu warriors- Nakago, Suboshi, Amiboshi, Soi, Miboshi, Tomo, and Ashitare. Suboshi has a crush on Yui, while Amiboshi (Suboshis twin brother) is in love with Miaka. When Amiboshi falls in love with Miaka he leaves the seiryuu warriors for good, and ends up helping Miaka in the end. Nuriko begins to realize that he likes Miaka for more than a good friend, but he knows that Miaka only loves Tamahome. Nuriko then loves Miaka as a brother.
The battle between Suzaku and Seiryuu is more than just a magical and physical battle of two countries, but it is also a battle for the friendship of Miaka and Yui. It is a battle of brutality, violence, killing, bloodshed, grief, and anguish. The battle not only takes place in the ancient china world, but in modern Tokyo as well. In the end Miaka and Yui have a better understanding for their friendship.
