Papa Zechs - by Caliko

“Why me?” Milliardo Peacecraft, aka Zechs Marquis cradled his head in his shaking hands, wondering just who had it out for him.

“Well, It’s either you, or they will all go into the foster care system. I, personally, don’t want to see Heero Yuy terrorize some unsuspecting shmuck. At least you’ll be able to control them.”

“You can‘t be serious, Lady Une...”

“Zechs... when all is said and done.. they are just kids. They have never had the chance to be young. If you take guardianship, they can! It’s only for two years! I’m sure that you and Noin can handle it!”

“Two long years... Have you forgotten that Heero is dating Relena? That Relena LIVES with me? How am I supposed to keep them from hopping into each others beds? How am I supposed to get them to ACT like kids, when they have been treated as grown men for so long?” Another thought hit, and he asked, shuddering, “Do I have to make them go to school?”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out. At least it’s not all of them.”

“Oh no. I just get stuck with the trouble makers!”

“Well, both Quatre and Trowa have family to assume guardianship. Wufei, Heero, and Duo don’t.”

“What about Wufei? Wasn’t he married at one point? Doesn’t that make him a legal adult or something?”

“The council is afraid that he’ll go rouge again. He is, shall we say.. highly excitable. He’s been working as a preventer, and doing a good job, too. The council just doesn’t want him running around loose.”

“So I’m stuck with him?”

“You’ll do it?”

“Lady Une... I don’t see that I have a choice.”

(Knock, knock)

The sound came from the other side of the door. Duo Maxwell opened his eyes and looked at the clock. The digital face glowed green, clearly showing that it was three am.

“(yawn)..Come back later! We’re CLOSED!” he called out the open window.

Laying back down, he burrowed his face back into Hilde’s neck and pulled her body closer to his.

(Knock, knock)

“I said, GO AWAY! We’re closed!”

(Crash!)

“What the fu...” The living room door crashed inwards. Duo sat up in bed. Reaching into the nightstand, his hand closed around his pistol. Unfortunately, his sleep deprived reflexes were just a little too slow, as another gun was shoved directly into his face. Looking up, his eyes met the calm, cold pits of Zechs Marquis.

“I thought we were allies...” Duo mumbled, pulling the sheet high enough to hid Hilde’s naked breasts.

“Duo? (yawn) Who’s here?” Her voice was soft, just waking up.

“Babe... If you move anymore, you will flash our guest.”

“Wha? Who is that?” She cracked her eyes open to see a tall man with long blond hair holding a gun to Duo’s face.

“Hilde... Meet Zechs. Marquis, this is Hilde. Now that the introductions are over, what the fuck are you doing in our bedroom holding a gun on me?”

“You didn’t answer your door.”

“Put that thing down! It’s the middle of the night! Couldn’t you CALL first?”

“Considering what I know.. I didn’t want to give you any warning.”

“Why do I have the feeling that I’m not going to like this?”

“Probably because you’re not. I certainly don’t. I’ll be in the next room so that your ... friend.. can get dressed.”

“You know, Duo...” Hilde started, “I don’t think I like him.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Excuse me? What did you just say?” He leaned closer, hoping that he heard wrong.
“The council has given me legal guardianship over you, Heero, and Wufei. They expect you back on Earth, and in school first thing Monday morning.”
“NO.” Duo was not hearing this! “I don’t believe this, Zechs! What the hell do they think I am, a kid?” He shook his head, pissed.
“As a matter of fact, they do. I didn’t have to agree with this, but I figured you would deal better with me than with some idiot who never even fought in the war. I’m sorry.. .really.”
“You don’t understand... I have a business to run! I just got engaged! I don’t have time for this bullshit!”
“I do? Look.. think of this as an opportunity..”
“You have got to be kidding? Well.. thanks, but no thanks!”
“I wasn’t asking you, Maxwell.”
“And how are you planning to get me to be a good little boy?”
Zechs’ smile was unpleasant, reaching across his face, but leaving his eyes blank.
“I was really hoping that I wouldn’t have to do this....”
“What?” Duo suddenly didn’t feel so good...
Preventer Wind took an envelope from the inside pocket of his jacket. Smirking, he watched Duo the entire time. His body language alone told his new ward that he held all the cards. He opened up the envelope, taking out a single sheet of paper. Handing it to Duo, he sat down on the nearest chair and placed his feet upon the table.
Duo read the letter, his face going white. Looking down at Zechs, he could feel true hatred squeezing his heart.
“You bastard! You made sure that I had no choice!”
“Look, I really am sorry, Maxwell. At least, this way, your business will still be here when you get back. As Une kept telling me.. It’s only for two years.”
“You.. cut.. me.. off! My bank accounts are sealed, my credit chips canceled! Damn it! You even hold the mortgage on my shop!”
“I’ll tear the mortgage up as a birthday present for you.. when you turn 18. The garage would be yours, free and clear. As for credit chips, you won’t need them until your 18, anyway. As your guardian, it’s my duty to pay your bills.”
“I’m not going anywhere without Hilde!” Duo insisted, belligerently meeting the older man’s eyes.
Zechs nodded his agreement, saying, “We can work something out.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Someone warned Heero. When they reached the Perfect Soldiers rooming house, there was nothing left for the former Lightning Baron to find. No shoes, no shirts, nothing. There wasn’t even a matchbook cover in the garbage can. Zechs looked at his young protege’s smirking countenance, and knew immediately who the villain was.

Duo stared back at his guardian, not even bothering to hide his guilt. As long as he was busy chasing after Heero, he wouldn’t be able to keep close tabs on him. He was really a little disappointed. Zechs was no challenge at all!

“You do realize that I can ground you.. indefinitely, don’t you?”

“Heh!!! You can TRY.”

Cursing, the normally controlled blond narrowed his eyes, seriously wondering if the pilot was too big to spank. Gritting his teeth, he turned on his heel and left, pulling the pain in the ass after him by his braid.

“Hey now! Let go!” Duo ranted, trying to get his feet underneath him. “This is child abuse!”

“Yes.. it is, isn‘t it?”

Reaching the limo, Zechs opened the door and practically threw the boy inside. Duo landed on the floor, scowling. Climbing up into the seat next to a choking Hilde, (She thought it was funny), he glared at his guardian, firing one last shot.

“Betcha can’t find Wufei, either...”

Marquis cradled his head in his palms, trying to calm down before the migraine hit. He had two long, dreary years playing big brother to this lunatic. He just knew that he was in way over his head.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heero Yuy watched from the empty rooftop across the street, smirking in amusement as Zechs came storming out of his boarding house with Duo in tow.
:::::I’ve been wanting to do that since he broke me out of the hospital...:::: he snorted, hearing the other pilot rant.
:::::I still can’t believe that the council would do this! After all that we’ve done for them, NOW they consider us kids? What do we have to do to prove ourselves capable of taking care of ourselves?:::::
He focused his binoculars, taking care to keep the sun behind his back. The girl with them was familiar. Hilde something... she had been the one to get the Libra information for them.
:::::humph! Wonder if Marquis realizes that it’s the same girl?:::::
Duo raised his hand, pretending to wipe sweat from his eyes. There.. that was the signal. Heero turned around and moved to a more hidden area of the roof. He could stop watching, now that he knew that Duo found the transmitter.
Hiding out was one thing.. not being reachable in an emergency was something entirely different. He would never forgive himself if Relena died because he was too proud to be a ward of the government.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“NO! Absolutely not!”

“You said...” Duo began, unknowingly using the very same line that teenagers have used forever.

“I SAID that she can come with us.. I even went so far as to give her the same deal I gave you. She goes to school, possibly college, and I pay the bills. There is NO WAY that she is sleeping in your bed!”

“But.. but.. I can’t sleep without my Hilde!”

“Learn. This is my house, my rules. As long as you’re living here, you will follow them!”

Zechs was at the end of his rope. This .. PILOT.. had given him more trouble in the last twenty-four hours than any soldier had during the war. He had to get control of the situation now, or he never would!

“Fine! HILDE! We’re going!” He walked over to the exit, then stopped when he realized that his girlfriend wasn’t following.

“I said, HILDE! We’re going!” He looked right at her, annoyed when she just smiled in return.

“Hilde?” He asked, suddenly unsure, “You too?”

“No. Not me, too. I just don’t think that you’ll make it passed the guards. Tell you what... you leave.. and come back and tell me if you make it.”

“That is not funny, girl!” Duo turned around, fully intending to leave the mansion and the grounds.

Seconds later, Zechs gave a self-satisfied smirk as the braided pilot was dragged past the doorway and up the stairs by the ankles. Shaking her head, Hilde ran after them, wincing as Duo’s head seemed to hit each and every step. Not surprisingly, the young pilot looked a bit dazed from the rough handling.

That night, after dinner, Hilde nervously entered Duo’s room with his dinner. Upon seeing her, he glared, turning his head away.

The guards had him tied down with Velcro straps. His hair was loose, testimony that they checked him for stray toys, and the TV was turned on. Someone with a sick sense of humor had it playing a Disney cartoon marathon, laughing at how the mighty had fallen.

“Go away!” He snarled, not wanting to see the ‘Judas’.

“Duo, Duo, Duo....” Hilde chanted, setting his tray down. “I want to tell you something... then I’ll let you loose...”

“PLEASE.. Don’t do me any favors!” He snorted, keeping his head turned away.

“DUO.... “ Hilde bent closer, whispering into his ear.. “Zechs has to sleep sometime.... and my room is only down the hall.”

“Hmmm?” Interested, he turned back towards her, watching her face to see if she was messing with him.

“Yup...”

“You’ll.. sneak into my room?”

“Well, I’m sure that he’ll be listening for it.. but I’ll wait till about three am.. then make my Duo-baby a very happy man!” She giggled as he lunged for her, laughing harder as the straps pulled him back into place....

“Hmmmm.... Maybe we can use them tonight...” She plotted, enjoying the mischievous answer in her lovers smile.

Wufei looked out of the dank cave and into the morning rain, cursing the government council for their high-handed sense of justice. His Preventer uniform was mere rags, testimony to how that bear was luckier than he. He had lost the leather lace that fastened his hair, and lank clumps fell over his face and ears. There was simply no justice in this world....

Why did the council choose now to remember that he was underage? Why not ... say.. the day after his eighteenth birthday? He did a good job, and worked hard! He couldn’t count how many times he pulled thier fat out of the fire, and still.. they considered him .. a child.

Even more annoying was the fact that they expected him to live with that idiot, Duo. NO THANK YOU! He had enough experience with that, if you please. There was nothing on Earth valuable enough to tempt him into sharing a house with him again!

Gods! He was hungry... The bear got his food, as well.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hilde effortlessly sneaked past Zechs room, her slippered feet making no sound on the hallway carpet as she walked. She was forming devious sexual plots in her head, her body singing with the knowledge that she would be with Duo soon.
Finally, Hilde made it to the door. She reached for the handle, and turned. Wincing at the grating sound it made, she lightly pushed the door open, unprepared for the sight that met her eyes.
Heero sat on the bed, nonchalantly talking to Duo, as if breaking into the mansion was a cake walk. Sensing her presence, he looked up, his hand already on his weapon. Seeing her, he merely nodded, and turned back to Duo.
“Ok.. that’s good! I‘ll see you next week, Duo.” And he was gone, slipping out via the window.
“What was that about?” she asked, awed that he made it this far.
“Heero is going to go visit with Relena...” Duo smirked, not noticing her face get white with worry.
“Duo!”
“Yeah, I have to hand it to that guy.. He really knows how to keep his freedom!”
“DUO!” she called, just a bit louder.
“I hope they’re not too loud.. I don’t want Zechs to do a room check tonight.. after all.. we have plans ourselves!”
“DUO YOU IDIOT!”
“Babe? What’s the matter?”
“Relena’s room is one big trap! Zechs PLANNED for Heero to break in!”
“Oh shit....” He mumbled, just as steel plates zipped over the windows and something locked over his bedroom door. Opening it, he was shocked to see metal bars running down the empty space, trapping him in his room. Looking out through the bars, he met Heero’s glowering stare as the other pilot tried to shake the bars in front of Relena’s door.
