The
7th Willem Wijnberg AKC CHF Cancer Fundraiser
The Items for this Very
Special Fundraiser were created and donated by Willem Wijnberg,
a very talented artist from The Netherlands.
For the past seven years, Willem has made and donated all of the
items for his AKC CHF Cancer Fundraisers.
Thank you, Willem, for your monumental work to fight cancer in
our Berners.

CANCER ~ it's a word
that strikes fear into your heart and stomach! Have you heard that
diagnosis for one of your Berners? Depending on the type of cancer,
it can be something where there is hope, or something where there is
nothing that can be done to save your precious Berner. There is
cancer research being done in many places which will extend the
lives of our Berners (and ourselves) when breakthroughs are made.
This research is expensive but it is also very necessary if we are
going to extend the life expectancy of Berners.. Here are some of
the grants that "Berner Lovers" have funded:
(1) University of Rennes
#336B - Mapping of the Gene for Malignant Histiocytosis in the
Bernese Mountain Dog - Francis Galibert
(2) National Human Genome Research Institute (NIH) #336A -
Mapping of the Gene for Malignant Histiocytosis in the Bernese
Mountain Dog - Elaine Ostrander
(3) National Human Genome Research Institute (NIH) #935A -
Positional Cloning of Two Genes for Malignant Histiocytosis (MH) in
the Bernese Mount Dog - Elaine Ostrander
(4) University of California, Davis #2646 - Characterization
of Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Dysfunction in Malignant Histiocytosis -
Cheryl London
(5) North Carolina State University #2667 - Cellular Genomics -
Molecular Cytogenetic Investigation of Canine Soft Tissue Sarcomas -
Matthew Breen

As you can see from the abstracts of the researchers, there is
a lot of cancer research being done, particularly in malignant
histiocytosis. Research is being conducted into histiocytic
diseases, hemangiosarcoma, mast cell cancer, osteosarcoma, and
lymphoma. Berners get all of these cancers, among others. What can
you do to help? You can support our Cancer Fundraiser so we can fund
grants to further investigate cancer in Berners and hopefully,
someday in our lifetimes, see the results of the research expressed
in a longer lifespan for our beloved breed.
