Shopping at the BMDCA Specialty 2012

In 1998, Pat Long attended her first National Specialty and upon returning home she did a series of articles featuring the vendors from the Specialty. I attended my first National Specialty in 1999 and Pat asked me if I would like to continue the series. I have done the “Shopping at the Specialty” series every year since then and know that those of you who can’t attend the Specialty love seeing the photos of the items at the vendors’ booths and seeing the details about what they are selling.

This year many of the specialty vendors set up their booths on Sunday and the lucky people who were already at the Specialty drifted over to the Allstar Center and began buying items from the vendors. The next year’s Specialty is always one of the most popular booths because everyone wants to buy the new T-shirt and other items. The new logo is fantastic and looks terrific on the T-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball caps, and other things. I especially loved the messenger bags with the 2013 logo
Next year’s Specialty will be at The Ranch Events Complex and Embassy Suites Hotel, Spa and Conference Center in Loveland, CO. Be sure to visit the website to see the details of how to enter the lottery for the host hotel: http://www.bmdca.org/specialty/2013/

The 2013 Specialty Ways and Means gave me a gray messenger bag and a light blue baseball cap for the 2013 Berner-Garde Fundraiser.

The apple themed logo for the 2012 Specialty was very popular this year. In fact, it was so popular that they began running out of items mid-week! By the last day of the Specialty, they only had Berner flip flops and stadium seats left to sell. As Best of Breed was ending, they completely sold out of all of their items!! Even though you can’t buy anything from the 2012 Specialty Ways and Means, you can still see how nice their items were.

The moral of this article is: SHOP EARLY AT NEXT YEAR’S SPECIALTY, AND IF YOU SEE SOMETHING YOU LIKE, BUY IT RIGHT AWAY!!

This vendor had a booth full of interactive dog toys that would thrill any dog of any breed! I could have bought dozens of things to bring back home to our Berner and German Shorthair Pointer and ended up coming back several times to get things. I had never seen some of the toys, and others were things that I know entertain and challenge dogs. They carry Berner Swirl Skirts, and Berner long and short sleeve T-shirts in iris, aqua, and red ($18-$21). Their tri-color fleece braided leash is soft and a perfect fit for your hand. It’s great if your dog likes interactive play with you as a reward after running. Their website features crates, rubber and vinyl toys, harnesses, leashes, storage bowls, balls and launchers, a wide variety of treat/toy games, chew toys, interactive toys, plush toys, water toys and treats. You are sure to find some great items for your Berners. Be sure to go to their website to see their items.

The BMDCA booth was jam packed with such wonderful Berner items that it was difficult to pick out which ones to buy! Early in the week, they had gorgeous soft chenille hooded jackets in such pretty pastels. I should have bought one when I first saw them because when I went back later in the week when I had a few minutes of downtime from doing Longshots with Pat Long, they were gone. I hope they have them again next year, and if they do, I’ll buy one early in the week.

Here are some of the other BMDCA logo items that they had at their booth:
1. BMDCA embroidered Columbia fleece vests – men’s and women’s sizes Small to 3XL in navy, black and charcoal gray
2. BMDCA embroidered comfort crew sweatshirts – unixex sizes from Small to 3XL
3. Berner art by Andrea Madely (really cute items): Coffee mugs ($15), Clocks (Small - $15 and Large - $40), Tiles ($15)
4. Laser engraved rollerball pens ($10) – black and bronze
5. Black “50 State Legal” license plate frames: “A Working Breed – Bernese Mountain Dogs” (2 for $10)
6. Heavenly soft, chenille throws ($35) in pink, purple, red, and blue with BMDCA logo
7. The 2011 BMDCA Yearbook – information and the ordering form will run in the soon to come out Bulletin. The form will also be placed on the website and posted on Facebook. The cost at the Specialty was $40 but when mailed postage/handling will be added, so we don’t the exact price for the yearbooks yet.
8. Miscellaneous other BMDCA logo items: Mugs, baseball caps, previous years’ yearbooks and yearbook CD, Illustrated Standard, magnets, T-shirts, sweatshirts, water bottles, and various other neat Berner items.

Email Beverly Hilmes at bernese4me@aol.com to order items from this list and to ask her about other BMDCA logo items that are available.

Pat’s Embroidery specializes in custom embroidery designs on a wide range of products: Shirts of all styles, vests, sweatshirts, jackets, linens, towels, tote bags and other items. Custom work of individual dogs, logos and special creations are her forte. This year Pat Helmbold introduced several new designs including: The ‘Purple Puppy,’ ‘Born to be Wild on a motorcycle, ‘A Home is not a Home without a Berner,’ and Rosti pulling a cart. Numerous designs from previous Specialties are available by special order. Each design created by Pat is unique, capturing the personality of the dog and strikingly lifelike. Pat works from photos and drawings from individuals and works with several artists. Although specializing in Bernese Mountain Dogs, she has designs for many other breeds and also has many commercial designs available. Prices of her products range from $ 15 to $ 20 for simpler designs, to several hundred dollars, depending upon the complexity of the design and the medium to be embroidered. Custom work is by quotation, depending on design time and number of stitched in the design. Special orders are always welcome and receive prompt attention. I bought the “Born to be Wild” on a motorcycle shirt for my daughter-in-law this year and it was a big hit with my son and her! To all her customers and friends, Pat says “Thank you.” Be sure to send an email to Pat or give her a call to place your orders. You’ll love her embroidered items.

Pat Helmbold has donated an embroidered periwinkle Berner jacket and a zippered hoodie with customized design to the 2013 Berner-Garde Fundraiser.
