Ditzy teenager Serena is informed, by a talking cat named Luna, that she
is actually
Sailor Moon -- a superhero-like champion of the Earth, who's destiny is
to fight against
an evil villain called Queen Beryl.
Queen Beryl and her evil cronies are from an alternate dimension called
the
Negaverse. (In Japanese it's referred to as the Dark Kingdom.) The goal
of the
Negaverse is to take over the Earth, drain away all its energy, and use
the energy to
resurrect the Negaforce. (In Japan, the Negaforce is the Dark Kingdom's
terrifying
Queen Metallia.)
Now even though Luna has given Serena her magic locket which allows her
to use her
special powers and change into Sailor Moon, Serena has a very difficult
time believing
she's supposed to be a hero, and doesn't take her duties seriously.
Luna's number one priority - along with trying to identify the other Sailor
Scouts - is to
find the Moon Princess and ask for her help. The Moon Princess is from
the Moon
Kingdom, which Queen Beryl destroyed long ago.
Over time, the Sailor Scouts are discovered and gathered together -- Sailor
Mercury,
Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus.
There is also the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, who often appears to 'help' the
Sailor
Scouts. He claims to only be helping them in order to gain all the Rainbow
Crystals for
himself. Darien (aka Tuxedo Mask) at first has no memory of being Tuxedo
Mask, and
believes that these Rainbow Crystals can help provide answers to the strange
dreams
he has about being Prince Darien in another life (Prince Endymion in Japan),
who loved
the Moon Princess.
Tuxedo Mask's attempts to get all the Rainbow Crystals fails, and he is
hypnotized by
Queen Beryl and forced to fight against Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts.
In a final
showdown with Queen Beryl, the other Scouts are captured by the Negaverse
one at a
time, leaving Sailor Moon to fight the hypnotized Tuxedo Mask on her own.
This proves
to be a huge mistake on the part of Queen Beryl, because the love of Darien/Tuxedo
Mask and the other Scouts for Sailor Moon awakens the Moon Princess in
her. Sailor
Moon is the Moon Princess, and each of the Sailor Scouts is the reincarnation
of their
own planet's Princess. who were all part of, and ruled over by the Moon
Kingdom. The
Scouts, Prince Darien, and the Moon Princess were all part of the Moon
Kingdom's
Royal Court.
In the end, Queen Beryl is defeated by this collective power of love and
loyalty, through
the Moon Princess' Silver Crystal.

Japanese: Episodes 47-74
English: Episodes 53-65 (Alan & Ann) & 41-52 (Dark Moon)
Alan and Ann Storyline
After the defeat of the Negaverse, the five Sailor Scouts are 'reborn'
in a way -- with no
memory of their previous careers as superheroes, or of being friends. But
then two
aliens appear, masquerading as junior high school students, and Luna and
Artemis are
forced to 'wake' up Serena's memories, and those of the other Scouts.
The two aliens are Alan and Ann, who have come to Earth to steal life energy
from
humans to feed their Doom Tree - which is the source of their own energy.
Alan and
Ann's desperate struggle to survive drives them to attack their fellow
students.
During the battles between the Sailors, and Alan and Ann, Darien once again
'splits'
into two personalities -- only instead of Tuxedo Mask, he appears as the
Moonlight
Knight. (After the battle with Queen Beryl, Darien was left with no memory
of his
relationship with Serena, Sailor Moon or the Moon Princess. So his subconscious
creates the Moonlight Knight to protect the Moon Princess.
Eventually, thanks to Sailor Moon, Alan and Ann learn that the tree thrives
on the
power of love and friendship -- something they've only recently come to
understand
(Alan developed an infatuation with Serena and Ann had a crush on Darien.)
Sailor
Moon heals the Doom Tree with her Moon Sceptre and saves the lives of Alan
and
Ann, who leave Earth to raise the new Tree together. The Moonlight Knight
then
disappears back into Darien because he is no longer needed.
This is where the North American version of Season 1 ends, and Season 2 begins.
Dark Moon Storyline
At the start of this second storyline, beings from a future who call themselves
the Dark
Moon family travel back in time to present-day Tokyo to try and change
the course of
history thus destroying the city in the 30th century -- which is called
Crystal Tokyo. To
accomplish this, these Dark Moon agents try and corrupt sections of the
city which
are Crystal Points in the future in order to weaken the structure of Crystal
Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Serena and Darien, memories restored, are a happy couple until
the
appearance of a young, pink-haired girl named Rini who arrives out of nowhere
(she
actually falls out of the sky onto Serena's head.) Rini carries with her
the Luna Sphere
(a robotic, floating ball resembling Luna's head). Rini first uses her
Luna Sphere to
hypnotize Serena's family into thinking she is just a cousin come to visit.
Soon after Rini's appearance, Darien begins to have strange dreams that
show
disaster for Sailor Moon if he continues to see her -- so he begins avoiding
Serena,
leaving her heartbroken.
Rini has come back to the past from Crystal Tokyo. (In the 30th century,
Crystal
Tokyo is a huge city centering around commerce and diplomatic relations
between
other civilizations and peoples.) Rini was sent back to modern day Tokyo
by the
Guardian of Time. Her Luna Sphere is used to communicate with this Guardian.
She is desperate to find Sailor Moon and her Silver Crystal, because she
believes it
can save her mother's life (her mother is Neo Queen Serenity). Eventually,
Rini sees
the Sailor Scouts transform and discovers that Serena is Sailor Moon, and
concludes
that Darien is Tuxedo Mask. When Rini tries to steal the Silver Crystal
to return to the
future, she is noticed by Rubeus (the leader of the Four Sisters), who
uses her to set a
trap for the Sailors.
Rini and Sailor Moon free the other Scouts, allowing them to win their
first battle
against the Dark Moon. But the Dark Moon is strong and their attempt at
destroying
Crystal Tokyo is not yet over.
