When one plays with the powers reserved for the gods, serious consequences arise. The power of Creation was reserved for god himself. When people like Victor Frankenstein create something such as a man, he faces obstacles that the human race is not yet prepared for. "He had come forth from the hands of God a perfect

creature…but I was wretched, helpless, and alone" (Shelley 135).

The reason Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is so scary is because it represents a possible horror that could actually happen. However, this story is just that: a fairy tale, figment of the imagination, a fake.

People may discard the horror of Frankenstein without much thought, but there are forces in our world now that also seek to play with the powers of God. Clonaid, a Dutch company started by Rael, the head of the Raelian religious cult, claims to have cloned hundreds of embryos and given birth to several cloned babies. Victor Frankenstein's drive to create this monster created something horrible to him: "Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room…but I was disturbed by the wildest dreams" (Shelley 51).

Brigitte Boisselier, President of Clonaid, is playing with these powers on a much greater scale. If what they claim they are creating is real, perhaps they are about to re-create a modern Frankenstein without even realizing it.

People like Boisselier and Frankenstein can only create suffering. "…Let me cease the favourable moment, and persuade you to promise what I so ardently desire" (Shelley 155). Frankenstein was unable to give his own creation what it so deeply desired, himself lacking the will God has to give compassion upon his creations. Victor Frankenstein was the true villain, as Brigitte Boisselier is the villain of mankind.
