The Shadow is Quicker Than the Eye

Episode 6

When Phoenix woke up that morning she was really tired.  She thought something had woken her up.  When she opened her eyes Kiro was floating in front of her face.

“Hey!  It’s time to get up!”  Kiro said.  “You think you could bring me up some breakfast?  I was up extra early playing video games and I worked myself up an appetite.  I haven’t played a good video game in 30 years.  I missed them almost as much as I missed chocolate pudding.  Speaking of which, do you think that you have any pudding left over from last night? Huh? Do ya?  Do ya?”

Phoenix groaned, rolled over, put her pillow over her head and tried to go back to sleep.  She was still tired from the report on her grandfather she had composed.  It was almost finished, she just needed to type it up.  She had been up late last night working on it, and Kiro was not a pleasant wake up call.

“Phoenix!  Dad says to get up and get dressed!”  Jake said knocking on the door.  “I said get up!” he said as he opened the door.

Kiro zoomed over to Phoenix’s shelf and assumed a stiff, stuffed animal-like pose that came with years of practice.

Jake barged into the room and looked at Phoenix sleeping on the bed.  With a grin he went over and tickled Phoenix under her arms.

“Hey!  Stop!  No fair!”  Phoenix said laughing and sounding outraged at the same time.  She sat up and threw her pillow at her brother.  “Get out!” she said.

Jake stole out of the room laughing.  “Next time get up when I tell you!”

That day her family went out and spent the day together.  They saw a virtual film and had lunch together.  They then went shopping for some new clothes for Phoenix and Jake.  By the time they got home it was late afternoon and Phoenix was exhausted.  She was so tired that she didn’t notice a shadow skulking around her yard.

After she took a shower and got dressed she went back into her room and saw Kiro sitting in front of the TV watching the news.  “So much has happened in the world since I have been in that book.  This 3D TV is awesome and these new video games are so much better than the other ones I used to play!”

“Do you think that instead of just eating and playing video games you could do something constructive?”  She asked him going to the window.  “There are 54 more Star Cards out there and we have to figure out how to recapture them all.  Hey!  There’s a really awesome sunset tonight!  It looks so pretty don’t you think?”

Kiro flew over to the window.  “Yeah it looks cool!  Hey!  Did you see that?”

“What?  I don’t see anything.  What did it look like?”  Phoenix asked.

“I don’t know.  It looks like something moving around the yard.  I can sense it!  It’s a Star Card!”

“Ok!  Let’s go!”  Phoenix said as she grabbed the wood card, the odifous, the Clow Key, and the Lasin Board that her grandfather had given her and put them in her backpack.  She then grabbed her roller blades and swung them over her arm.  “Get in.”  She told Kiro as she opened up her backpack.  He Groaned and flew into her backpack.

“Ok.  But make it quick.  I can’t breathe in here!”  He told her.

“Mom!  Dad!  I’m going out for a little while!  I’ll be back in time for dinner!” She called as she ran down the stairs.

“Ok honey!  Have fun!”  Her mom called back.

“Where did it go?” Phoenix whispered as she put on her roller blades outside.

“I’m not sure.  It’s around here somewhere.”  Kiro replied.

“I won’t be able to catch it if I don’t know how to fight it.  Do you know which one it is?”  Phoenix asked.

“No.  It’s a stealthy one.  I don’t think it’s one of the element cards.  It might be the dash or jump.”  Kiro replied.

“You know it might help me if you made out a list of the cards and what their abilities are.”  Phoenix whispered to him as they left her yard.  “Then at least I will have some idea of what I’m up against.”

“Can we talk about this later?”  Kiro asked.  “Right now we have to track that Star Card.”

“How do we do that?  I don’t see a card anywhere.”  Phoenix told him.  “I could try to use this lasin board that my grandfather gave me, but I have no clue how to work it.”

“You use it the same incantation that you use for the odifous.  Just concentrate.”  Kiro told her.

“Right.” Said Phoenix.  She glanced around to make sure that no one was around. She then closed her eyes and concentrated.  “Force know my plight.  Release the light!”  As she said the incantation a bright light shot out from the lasin board and headed down the street.

“This way!”  Kiro said as he and Phoenix hurried down the street in the direction of the light.  Phoenix was skating as fast as she could with Kiro close behind.  They saw the light stop up ahead as they reached it they saw that it stopped in the shadow of a street sign.

“What…?”  Phoenix asked.  “Where is the Star Card?”  She said as they looked around.  From behind them the lamppost’s shadow morphed into a dark, cloaked figure.

“Uh… Phoenix.”  Kiro said tapping her shoulder as he noticed the figure.

Phoenix gasped in surprise.  “What’s that?”

“The Shadow Card’s true form!”  Kiro told her.

With that the shadow card reverted to it’s shadow form and raced down the street with Kiro and Phoenix close on it’s heals.

“We have to figure out a way to stop it!”  Kiro said.  “The shadow card is fast and it can slip through cracks in walls.  The only way to stop it is to entrap it!”

“Do you think that the Wood Card could entrap it?  It doesn’t seem as fast as the Shadow Card.”  Phoenix asked.

“It’s worth a try.”  Kiro said.  “We would have to cut it off somewhere to get close enough though…”

“Alright!  Hold on!”  Phoenix said as she increased her speed.  Kiro grabbed on to her shoulder as she raced on.  Just as she almost caught up to it the shadow swerved and entered the park.

The Park was deserted except for a few stray cats and the swings and slide.  The sun was just starting to set in the horizon and everything seemed calm.

“Phoenix.  You’ll need the staff to call upon the Wood Card and to seal the Shadow Card!”  Kiro told her.

“I’m on it!”  She said, pulling out the Clow key.  She closed her eyes and concentrated on the incantation to release the wand.

“Oh Key of Clow.

Power of Magic,

Power of Light,

Surrender the wand,

The Force ignite!

Release!”

The Clow Key transformed into the sealing wand and Phoenix grabbed it.  She then began looking around for the Shadow Card.  She closed her eyes and concentrated.  She felt the magic within herself flowing and the Magic of Kiro beside her.  She then sensed the Shadow Card, but she couldn’t pinpoint it’s location.

“It’s here somewhere.”  She told Kiro.

Just then the streetlights came on and lit up the park.  The shadows of the objects faded until they were almost nothing.  Except for one.

Phoenix noticed after a few moments that all the shadows had disappeared except for hers.  Realizing what was going on, but not wanting to alert the Shadow Card that she knew it’s location she silently pulled out the Wood Card while facing away from her shadow.

Using her staff she commanded.  “Wood Card I command you to form a solid barrier to entrap the my shadow!”

“What are you doing?!”  Kiro exclaimed.

The Wood Card rose from it’s card and quickly formed a impenetrable barrier of wood and vines that entrapped the Shadow Card.

“Shadow Card!  I command you to return to your power confined!  Shadow Card!”  Phoenix called using her staff.  The wooden barrier and what was inside was quickly pulled back into their card forms.  After the Shadow Card was sealed the Wood and Shadow Cards both floated down to Phoenix.  As she took them from the air she felt a sense of satisfaction.

“Alright!  Another Star Card down!  Now you’ve got 2 cards to help you on your quest!  Can I get something to eat now?”  Kiro asked.

Phoenix sighed and began her skate back home.  When she got there she quietly stuffed Kiro back into her backpack along with the lasin board and the Wood and Shadow Cards.  “I’m back!”  She called.

“Ok Phoenix!  Dinner is almost ready!”  Her mom said.

After dinner that night Phoenix was finishing up her homework and the ‘special’ report as Kiro was finishing up his seconds on the spaghetti her family had had for dinner.

“Aahhh… all finished.”  She said as she closed her last book.

“Yum!”  Kiro said as she woofed down the last of the spaghetti.  “Your mom is a really good cook.”  He told her as he licked the plate clean.  “That’s the best meal I’ve had in years.”

Phoenix smiled at him as she climbed into bed, exhausted from that day’s activities.  She wondered what her family would say if they ever found out what she was doing.  That was the last thought she had before she drifted off to sleep.
