Eriol is an exchange student from England and one of Clow Reed's reincarnations (well half goes to him the other half to Sakura's father). Around Sakura and the others, he's a really nice, gentle boy, but he's not just around them for friendship; he's challenging Sakura so that she can change all the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards. When he was Clown Reed, he hated being powerful enough to see the future, and as Eriol, he wanted Sakura to become powerful enough so that she could split his magic in half, so that he would possess half of it, and Fujitaka would have the other half.
Syaoran doesn't like Eriol ^^; even though Eriol is kind to everybody, including him, Syaoran is jealous because he thinks that Eriol's trying to take Sakura away from him, which seems true... when he first meets Sakura, he asks if they can call each other by their first names, (it took Syaoran SIX volumes to do that SIX volumes !) and after Sakura asks how she can repay Eriol by helping her make her bear for Yukito, he kisses her hand. Eriol's really hot and in my mind if he wanted Sakura he could have her easy *smiles happily* at least I would go out with him anytime he wanted me to *looks stary eyed and drools* Oh Yeah.
