The History of Ah! My Goddess

The Ah! My Goddess series of manga first appeared in a magazine published by Kodansha called Comic Afternoon on September 25th 1988. Ah My Goddess is actually Kosuke Fujishima's second series of manga, his first being the Taiho! Shichauzo (You're Under Arrest) series, which revolves around 2 policewomen, Natsumi and Miyuki, who patrol the streets of Tokyo and their personal lives.

There is a little story about the origins of the Ah! My Goddess manga series. In 1988, Fujishima did a four panel comic short as art of a contest where readers could win loads of Taiho Shichauzo (You're Under Arrest) merchandise. In it, Natsumi and Miyuki were praying to this goddess to let them win the contest. Fujishima liked how the goddess turned out, so this led to the creation of the goddess Belldandy.

So......is it Ah! My Goddess or Oh! My Goddess

The actual name of the series, in Japanese, the series is called "Aa! Megamisama". Literally translated, it means "Ah! My Goddess". This English translation can be seen in Japanese release of the OVA

However, the story goes that when it was pointed out to Kosuke Fujishima about the similarity of the title to the English expression of "Oh, my God!", which was what he was trying to do in the first place, the official English title for the series became "Oh My Goddess!". The Japanese title is still pronounced "Aa! Megamisama".When Animeigo and Studio Proteus brought in Kosuke Fujishima's goddess series, they decided that they would work together during the launch of the series, so they decided that the name would be "Oh My Goddess!" the official logo as it appeared in the Animeigo OVA release looked like this:

You can see the original Japanese name at the bottom of the logo. It still says "Aa! Megamisama". But everyone has his/her own way of saying out the name.

So......What Is The Story Anyway???

If you are new to the anime, this is an introduction to the story Ah! My Goddess: There is this boy Keiichi who wants to order food using the phone, but he calls the wrong number and ends up calling a goddess to come out through his mirror. The goddess then introduced herself as Belldandy and asked Keiichi what he wished for.................................

Overall this is an anime whereby a boy calls a goddess to earth and wished for her to stay with him forever. This wish binds her to earth and the couple falls in love. Then there are two more goddesses Urd and Skuld who comes in later episodes of the O.V.A and a fourth goddess Peroth who comes even later in the manga.
