gem facts

- jadeite has a splintery fracture and is very tough (that would explain his strong sense of pride and overconfidence and the fact that the senshi practically drove him to insanity) the mineral varys in may colours including emerald green, green, yellow, gray, and lavender

- is the brighter of the two minerals entitled to the name of jade - the other is nephrite (who came after jadeite)

- found in serpentine, derived from olivine rocks. but also recovered from pebbles or boulders in streams (two locations - two main powers)

- when cut it becomes an ornamented stone and precious gem. jade occurs typically as a dense massive rock suitable for carving large art objects (he was the first of the shitennou - basically the tester. hmmm, stranger still, he now resisdes in a block of ice next to beryls throne)

- is noted for it’s toughness and density, a consequence of being formed at high pressure (once again - pride and overconfidence comes in, also he was a little dense when it came to fighting the sailor senshi and alot of pressure was on him; being the first of the kings)

powers

jadeite's area of power lies in the art of illusion. he uses a disguise to infiltrate an area he wishes to drain. he has disguised himself numerous time when on a mission, even his youma would put on a disguise.

- when he draines energy, it collects in a glowing sphere held in his right hand
- when he teleports, a black hole opens up
- in his final appearance he used his powers to control 747’s in an airport

the tale

jadeite was the first to appear as one of queen beryl’s shitennou. it has been said that he was the weakest of all the kings and all he got by on was his looks. from the beginning, jadeite was fairly overconfident and cocky which caused him to frequently underestimate the senshi. his job was to collect energy for the dark kingdom, but, he foolishly tried to steal to much at once (from a large accumulation of humans), which led to him being found out and stopped by the sailor senshi (likely because his plans were too cheesy and elaborate to miss.) he usually took the form of a human while on a mission. jadeite has apeared as dj, talent co-ordinator, gym instructor, security guard, ship captain (which featured an instant tan) and a temple worker.

the dub

in the dub he was portrayed as more of a weak individual driven only on hate and greed (although neither version developed his character at all) his past was not revealed at all except for an old acquaintence named titus who helped him in the episode titled "cruise blues". in that episode he runs into serena (posing as a photographer) and is actually nice to her. he wonders to himself why he is being so nice to her, and can’t figure out what feeling he has for her (also note him cringe when he is polite to her.)

the original

in the original version jadeite was a much more mysterious character than the dub would have. in the episode where he disguises himself as a ship captain (aka. cruise blues) he uses the dark kingdom's best youma, titus - or rather she comes to jadeite. he chases her away, but she returns saying she has a "romantic cruise strategy". jadeite likes the sound of it and the two implement the scheme and are shortly after, attacked by the senshi. after titus is killed jadeite is about to fight the senshi but beryl teleports him back and chews him out for using her best, most important youma, Titus, and making her die. He replys saying that it wasn't his fault and that she had come to him.

in the end ...

after titus was killed, jadeite was one step away from death. he was warned that if he failed once more in defeating the sailor senshi he would be put into eternal sleep (which was reputed to be worse than death itself). in a desparate attempt, he sends a message to the sailor senshi in the sky (one they couldn’t miss) telling them to go to the tokyo airport at midnight. without any other options sailor moon, mercury, and mars were forced to fight him. jadeite learned their identities when they transformed, but, sadly, too consumed with hate and fear he was defeated by the senshi. queen beryl teleported him back after the battle and was put into eternal sleep for his repeated failures before he could reveal the scouts identities. he now resides next to queen beryl's throne in a large crystal as a warning to others.

in my humble opinion

as of yet, i have not entirely formed an opinion on jadeite. i definately think he was jipped by the animators for haveing such a short lifespan on the show - not to mention the fact that basically nothing is known about him. although i do understand why that was done. since he was the first king and it was the beginning of the series, the main characters had to be developed in as little time as possible so the writers could also plug in the who 'moon princess' deal. as a result, jadeite was a 'filler' until everything else was developed and left room for character development for the kings that followed. tacticly wise, it seems as though he has even less traning than zoisite. jadeite frequently underestimated the skills of the senshi and all of his plans were to complicated and had plenty of holes in them. zoisite (though usually with help from his mentor) had the more effective 'smash-and-grab' style.
