TENCHI MOVIES

At the moment, there are two Tenchi Muyo movies out, Tenchi The Movie: Tenchi Muyo In Love and Tenchi the Movie 2: Manatsu No Eve or Daughter of Darkness for those of us in the USA.

The first Tenchi movie is based on the television series, and is 95 minutes long. The basic story behind it is that Tenchi is going to disappear, because some how, his mother was killed before he was even born. So, he and the girls must go back in time to save her life. I think that this film is great, because it first of all it gives us a little more background information on Tenchi himself, and because we get to meet his mother. A new super-fiend is introduced, and we get to take a look at Nobuyuki when he wasn't a pervert.

The second Tenchi movie is based on the OVA series, although Kiyone is in there, mostly to provide a connection with the TV series. The story this time is that another young girl has appeared at the shrine - a little girl claiming to be Tenchi's daughter! This film takes us a little more into Yosho's past, and runs along the lines of the cosmic balances, introducing Tsunami's equal and opposite: Yuzuha. Although only an hour long, there is so much packed into it that you almost think it's a full length movie.

The third movie, known as Tenchi Forever, has met with a lot of critisicm by the fan community. Many people, such as myself, liked it quite a bit; others absolutely hated it. It wasn't nearly as action oritented as the rest of the series, and delt almost entirely with the development of Tenchi, Ryoko and Ayeka. The basic plot behind it is that, after dodging Ryoko and Ayeka again, Tenchi finds a Camilia tree. A light appears, and he steps into the tree, seemingly in a trance.
