When I first saw this, I figured it was a scam. Skepticism is probably the normal reaction. So, I did a little bit of research, and discovered that this is 100% legitimate.

The sites (freeipods.com, freeflatscreens.com, freedesktoppcs.com, and freehandbags.com are run by a company called Gratis Internet (listed at the Better Business Bureau). The company makes their money from the referrals it sends to companies like AOL, BMG, blockbuster, etc (these are the only company that see your credit card information, and they're all reputable). And since the proportion of people who get the ipods from those who sign up and complete referrals is so low (most people don't bother to refer their friends), the company makes an incredibly huge profit.

The process is simple.

Sign up at freeipods.com, freeflatscreens.com, freedesktoppcs.com or freehandbags.com (or all four!). It is NOT a good idea to use a hotmail or gmail address, since these email providers typically have issues with the confirmation emails.
After registering, you will get a series of survey offers. Click "no" for all of them, as they are not necessary.
Check your email and click the verification link from the site. If you do not see it, check your junk mail. You can always have it sent to you through your account page on the freeipods/flatscreens/desktoppcs/freehandbags site.
Complete one of their listed offers. Most require a credit card, but are completely free (if you cancel before the trial period ends). I reccomend Blockbuster, Tickle, and Infone, if they are available. AOL and Netscape are also excellent offers.
Have some of your friends do the same. You need 10 referrals for the PC, 8 for the flatscreen, 5 for the handbags, and only 5 for the ipod!
Once all your requirements are completed, put in your order for the equipment, and wait for it to come to your door. The shipping is even free!
