The Saotome Page

Welcome to a page on Mr. and Mrs. Saotome!

Genma Saotome:

It’s not every day you see a giant panda at a doctor’s clinic. That’s because Mr. Saotome doesn’t have a job at every doctor’s clinic. Mr. Saotome is Ranma’s pop. He got turned into a panda while with Ranma, when he fell into “spring of drowned panda”. There is very tragic legend of panda that drown there 2000 year ago, and now anyone who falls in gets turned into a giant panda. Mr. Saotome doesn’t really seem that bothered about his curse and has a part time job at doctor Tofu’s clinic. He and Ranma stay at the Tendo training hall with Genma’s good Soun Tendo, who he’s known since childhood. He and Soun agreed that Ranma should marry one of Soun’s daughters, so that they can carry on the training hall, and as both Nabiki and Kasumi are both quick off the mark an decide neither of them are the one for him, Akane gets to be engaged to Ranma. He uses wooden signs to communicate. He wears round glasses with loops around each ear. Genma Saotome is very much like his son, Ranma. He is somewhat arrogant when it comes to his martial arts abilities, which he rarely showcases due to cowardice or laziness. It was Genma that took Ranma to Jusenkyo. Because he was unable to read the pamphlet, which was in Chinese, he had no idea of the curses that existed there. Personality: In some ways, Genma is a more extreme version of his son - he is even more insensitive than Ranma, and is also very self-centred. For example he wanted to raise Ranma to be a strong martial artist, but doesn't seem to care how his methods have effected Ranma. He removed Ranma from his mother, and doesn't care about how this effected Nodoka, or how his stupid promise to her torments Ranma now. Also, Genma also stole food from Ranma (even when he was a child) and they still fight over it now. He also engaged Ranma to one of Soun's daughters, and later also engaged him to Ukyou, then dumped her, just because he was greedy. He has made other stupid promises with little regard to how they effect others - for example, he and Soun lost a food-eating contest to the Picollet's, and they both promised a daughter to them. Genma is also a petty thief, lazy, a coward, more than a bit stupid and often makes Ranma a scape-goat, and rarely helps him when he has his own problems. Ranma and Genma don't get along particularly well - they fight all the time, and often casually beat each other up. Also, the Tendo sisters and others don't have much respect for him, and often expect the worst of him. Genma does recognize his responsibilities as a martial artist in that he helps out the general public when it is needed, but he doesn't seem to take it that seriously or believe in it. For example, in one story, Genma, Ranma and Soün go to a town to help out with a problem, but Ranma is the only one who does anything, while the other two try can con the villages out as much as possible, and generally laze around.
Nodoka Saotome:

When Ranma was an infant, Genma left with him because his mother's influence was detrimental to training Ranma in Saotome-style martial arts. When he left, he promised to make him a manly man inside and out, or they would commit suicide like men. As a martial artist's wife, she accepted this decision. Nodoka received letters from Genma until their trip to Jusenkyou, until they suddenly stopped. She comes to the Tendo dojo wanting nothing more than to see her son Ranma grown to be a man, and intends to hold Genma to his promise if he isn't. But there she only meets Akane's "cousin" Ranko and her pet panda. Personality: Rather like Kasumi, Nodoka is a calm, quite and kind person, though she does take her responsibilities as a martial artist's wife very seriously, and also has a strong sense of justice - like Ranma. Though she does have a gentle personality, if circumstances require it, she will wield her sword, and will attack using it. She also treats 'Ranko' and Akane as would a mother, or close relation would. She deeply misses Ranma, and would very much like to see him, no matter what.
