This young man is somewhat of a loner. Although he has few friends, he is an excellent warrior and the central protagonist of the game. He is a trainee for SeeD the elite military academy, and is just about to graduate with high rankings. During the final missions issued by SeeD, he meets Rinoa, a lovely carefree young lady, and starts a relationship that is full of tribulations yet manages to maintain at the end. He and his fellow teammates will join forces with her and the Timber Owls to defeat Seifer, his long time rival, and the evil witch Edea that controls Galbadia.

Quistis joined Garden at the age of 10, and quickly earned a reputation in SeeD by the age of 15. Now, she is a teacher at Balamb GARDEN. Called "Trepe Teacher" by many of her students, she is a very agile warrior with superior fighting skills and is often more sensible to the needs of the students than many of the other teachers.

A master of martial arts, Zell is accustomed to using his hands and feet more so than any weapon in existence. Living the life of a rich boy, Zell desired to follow in his Grandfather's footsteps as a proud soldier of SeeD. Zell posseses a sense of humor that adds life to those around him and is always ready for action even though he may act in a naivete way at times.

Selphie Tilmett

Newcomer to Balamb GARDEN, and classmate of Squall, Selphie is one of the top in her class. Although her childish ways may prove otherwise, Selphie is also a potential warrior and has a vitality and youthfulness that are rare among others her age.

Rinoa Heartilly

Rinoa is somewhat of a shy person, but is very generous and caring to those around her. She was born in a town called Timber. But when it was occupied by the oppoising Galbadia soldiers, she formed a resistence movement she called the Timber Owls. Her plan was to assasinate the witch Edea who controlled Galbadia and even allied with Seifer from SeeD. During this time, she meets Squall whom she will start a love affair with throughout their adventure.

Irvine Kineas

An overconfident young man and claimed as the "best shooter around", Irvine is a student at Galbadia GARDEN and is linked to the takeover of the satellite system in Dollet. Little else is known about Irvine who on the surface seems like an independent and lady's man.

A determined journalist and retired soldier of Galbadia GARDEN, Laguna had made a successful living out in solitude. He becomes drawn into Squall's quest when he has a dream of him and Squall of him. Yet this relationship between the two is not entirely known although he acts and thinks much like a counterpart of Squall's imagination. He is joined by his trustworthy and inseparable comrades, Kiros and Ward.

A person with attitude and character, Kiros livens up the rather dreary life of Laguna and is one of his best pals. In a way you could say he acts just like Zell's counterpart.

A big husky figure with a mean look but a soft heart, Ward is one of Laguna's best companions. He used to be a janitor for a prison ward and ever since Laguna helped him out, he's been loyal to Laguna in almost every imaginable way.

Although a skillfull and worthy fighter, he unfortunately didn't graduate due to his short temper. Because of this he was envious and jealous of rival Squall who had just graduated. This made him extremely bitter and lead to the inevitable planning of his revenge. Seifer secretly allied himself with the opposing Galbadia army and Edea, the evil sorceress, for this purpose.

Edea comes from a powerful family of witches, and she is their successor. She is the central antagonist in the story and is the one reported for the malevolent intentions of the nation of Galbadia, including their declaration of war on the rest of the world. Later on, she lures Seifer in his vindictive state as a 'puppet' to lead the nation against the Timber Owls resistance and those who oppose her.
