Tai's Confession

Tai's Confession

A 16-year-old Tai strolled across the walkway which ran alongside the rows of apartment doors until he got to his apartment. He opened the door and walked by his mother in the kitchen making sushi.
"Oh, Taichi, how was your day?" his mother asked lovingly.
"Great, mom. I'm gonna go to my room now", he replied somewhat nervously.
"Alright. Supper will be in an hour", she said as she wrapped up some more sushi.
Tai walked to his room and picked up speed a little so he wouldn't have another encounter. Suddenly, his younger sister, Hikari jumped out.
"Hey, Tai, where've you been?" she asked.
"Um, just out playing soccer..." he replied.
"With Sora?" asked Kari.
"Yeah, with Sora..." Tai answered.
"You like her, dont you?" Kari said and then giggled.
"Uh..." started the embarrassed Taichi who then quickly looked at his watch.
"Oh, look at the time! Gotta do my homework! Talk to you later Kar!"
Tai dashed off into his room and shut the door leaving Kari in the hallway walking away shaking her head with a grin on her face. Tai wiped his brow and flopped himself onto his bed. He was exhausted after school. He was also bored. He closed his eyes for a minute and turned his head. He opened his eyes again and saw his computer. He sighed and lay there and thought for a while. Not again... why did he always feel like he had to do something everytime he looked at that computer?
He sat up, still looking at his computer. He looked around and then glanced at his wrist watch. Sora should be home by now. Should he? Would he? Could he? He debated these thoughts in his head.
For nine years he had felt this way, and not once had he ever attempted to really tell her his true feelings. Well, at first, they were just little children. They didn't know. They were only best friends, which was what they were now, still. But, when they were lost in the Digital World together, he felt the more time he spent with her, the closer he was drawn. It was her beautiful personality that worked its charm like a magnet.
Would he ever admit his feelings? He could even ever remember truely admitting his feelings to himself. How could he ever muster up the courage to tell her? He reached up around his neck. He felt it, the crest of courage. How could he have been given the crest of courage yet not have enough courage to ask a girl something? What was the worst that could happen? Losing his best friend... A life-long friend... that's what.
Every time he looked at his computer, he remembered that email that he had accidentally sent to Sora. The one that ended in, "LOVE, Tai". They had never talked about that email, never even mentioned it. Every time his eyes wandered upon that monitor screen and that keyboard, he felt he had to do it. But he hadn't done it yet. He'd never been able to send the messages he'd kept locked in the back of his mind.
He felt his crest again. He didn't have the crest of cowardness, he had the crest of courage. That's right, courage. He stood up on his bedroom floor and slowly walked over to his computer. He inched the chair out and sat in it. He took a deep breath and turned on his computer. His finger moved toward the monitor power button and he turned the monitor on. The screen flickered on as he heard the static clicks. The machine booted and he opened up his email account. He clicked on the "send new message" button...
He started typing:
"Hey Sora, how are things going? I'm fine."
No... thought Tai as he deleted it and started again.
"Dear, Sora---"
Still no... he thought as he deleted that and started yet a third time.
A poem... "that's it, a poem", he thought:

"Hello Sora
How are you?
I thought I'd sent this message to you

I need to get this off my chest
And I'm not sure how to say this best...

You've been a great friend to me in the past
And now I have to say at last,

This is something you should know
I enjoy your presence and your glow

You were always there when I was down
You knew how to get a smile from a frown

Your crest of love,
Did prove true,
And I must say that-"

Tai's palms were sweaty and his heart was beating fast. His fingers touched the keys lightly and slowly.

"And I must say that I-"

He stopped to regain his confidence, and then quickly typed in the last line:

"And I must say that I love you."

He only glanced over the message for a split second and then hit the "send" button. He started breathing heavily as millions of thoughts whirled through his mind. Why did he send that? How could he have been so bold? Then the worst thought entered his mind--She was going to read that message, she was going to read his every word, every emotion he'd ever felt for her was actually going to be viewed by her personally--he felt sick to his stomach.

Meanwhile, Sora walked into her room and set down her tennis gear. She then went right to her computer to check her email as she usually did every day after practice. She noticed she had a new message. Curious, she opened up the message and every part of her body seemed to stop. She stopped breathing, stopped moving, and even her heart seemed to stop. She read the poem:

Your crest of love,
Did prove true,
And I must say that I love you."

Sora swallowed in amazement. She read over the poem and read the name of the sender. Tai Kamiya... The same Taichi she knew? The same Taichi she had gone to school with for all these years? The same best friend, Taichi Kamiya? Could it be? Who else would know about her crest? It could be a trick from one of the others. But, no they wouldn't be that mean. She knew them too well.
Sora sat there reading the message over and over again, not knowing what to do. Suddenly, a small grin came upon her face. Tai... loved her? She couldn't believe it! She breathed faster and faster. Her secret crush had finally broken out the line she had longed to hear for years. Tai... loved her.
Sora took a deep breath and clicked the "Reply" button.
Then she herself started a poem of her own:

"Greetings Tai
Doing good?
Hope I'm not being more forward than I should.

I read your message, really sweet
To tell the truth, you're kinda neat...

You've been my best friend since first grade
And boy, what a bond we've made,

We've played soccer, shared our thoughts
Been pretty close since we were tots

So here it is,
My reply to you,
Just thought I'd say I love you too."

Sora quickly hit the "Send" button before she changed her mind and waited at her computer, not knowing what exactly she was waiting for.

Tai back at his apartment, hit the refresh button over and over again. He didn't expect to see any immediate replies really, but he was hopeful. Suddenly he hit refresh and there was something there that wasn't there before. His eyes went immediately to it. He looked at the sender name, "Sora Takenouchi". His finger, which was halfway to the mouse button to hit refresh, stopped.
Those haunting thoughts returned. She had probably emailed him back to tell him how dumb of him it was to send her an email like that, or to say that she hated him, or to say-
He suddenly clicked on the email and in the first split second his eyes saw the message and didn't see the words "You stupid idiot" or "I hate you", he breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back in his chair looking towards the ceiling. Then he thought... what if she replied to tell me that she liked me too? He paused and then quickly looked back at the screen:

"Greetings Tai
Doing good?
Hope I'm not being more forward than I should.

I read your message, really sweet
To tell the truth, you're kinda neat...

You've been my best friend since first grade
And boy, what a bond we've made,

We've played soccer, shared our thoughts
Been pretty close since we were tots

So here it is,
My reply to you,
Just thought I'd say I love you too."

He was suddenly overcome with rapture and joy. Immense feelings churned in his stomach, and a chill ran up and down his spine. He must be dreaming. He, like Sora, read the poem and read the sender name over and over again... "Sora Takenouchi", "...I love you too..." He clenched his sweaty fists and a smile ran across his face as he shouted out a happy, "YYYESSSS!"
He quickly typed out another reply, not caring about typos or really what he said. He may regret it later but he didn't care. They'd both done it. They'd both gotten through to eachother!

Sora hit the refresh button to find another email from Tai. Her eyes lit up and she quickly opened the message:

"Helo Sora did you mean wat yuo said? Whenn you said that yo lovde me too? Please reply ASAP"

Sora couldn't help but laugh, that was Tai alright, down to the very last typo.

"The answer to your question, Taichi Kamiya. Yes I meant every word of that poem and I hope the same goes for you when you sent yours. Love, Sora."

Tai got the email and read it. She meant it. He jumped out of his chair, accidentally knocking it over and ran out of his room and out of his apartment, with a confused mother and a giggling Kari standing behind in the kitchen.
"Tai?"
Tai ran to the elevator to go to Sora's floor, but when he got there he came skidding to a halt. There she was... Sora Takenouchi... the girl loved and had just confessed his feelings to. She was standing right there. Suddenly, he wondered why he was so eager to see her, for what was he to say to her? What was left to say?...
Tai watched breathlessly as she walked slowly up to him. They looked in eachother's eyes, seeming to stare into their souls, not daring to turn an eye away. Suddenly, without warning, they both seemed to lose control of themselves. They drew nearer and their eyes closed slightly as their lips locked. They had no idea how it happened and no idea who started it or why they did it. But the kiss to Tai seemed to be over as soon as it started. He opened his eyes to find his arms around her waist and her arms draped over his shoulders. They drew away from eachother, each in a kind of daze from what had just took place.
"S-Sora?" asked the shaking Tai.
"I..." started the dazed Sora.
"So, I guess you got my emails?"
"Yeah... and you got mine?"
"...Yeah...I mean, yes, I did."
Sora laughed lightly at the dumbfounded Taichi standing only a few inches from her, who, in turn, laughed nervously. Tai put rubbed his arm against the back of his head and rocked back and forth on his feet waiting for Sora to say something. Sora folded her arms with a smile and looked back and forth waiting for Tai to say something.
Suddenly at once they both started--"Sora, I-" "Tai, I-"--they laughed nervously again.
"What were you going to say?" asked Sora.
"Say? Oh, um, I was just going to say that I..." started Tai.
"That you..."
"That I meant what I said in the message, I really do love you", he finished.
Sora smiled and looked down at her feet.
"Sora? Are you... blushing?" asked the suprised Tai. He'd never seen her blush before...
Sora looked up at Tai. "Stupid Tai", she said as she drew up to him and they met mouths once again.

THE END
