good night = Oyasuminasai (nasai is added to be polite)
good bye = sayonara
see you later = ja mata
it's nice to meet you= dozo yoroshiku (the reply is kochira koso = it's nice to meet you )
how are you? = ogenki desu ka?
i'm fine= genki desu
and you? = anata wa?
I'm also fine= watashi mo genki desu.
thank you, very much = doumo arigatou gozaimasu = that's kind of you.
your welcome=douitashimashite (or iie)
what is your name? = o-namae wa nan desu ka?
i am sorry. = Gomen nasai
my name is _____= watakushi no namae wa _____ desu. ( ___desu.)
how is your family? = go-kazoku wa genki desu ka?
Fine, thanks. = Hai o-kage sama de.
FIRST TIME IN JAPAN
pardon me. (excuse me) = sumimasen. (knock on door and say "shitsureshimasu" and "anou" also gets attention)
i am looking for someone who speaks English = eigo no dekiru hito wa masuka.
do you speak english? = eigo o hanashimsau ka?
yes, i speak a little. = hai, sukoshi hanashi masu.(sukoshi sounds like skoshi)
do you know/understand english?= eigo ga wakarimasuka.
i think so = souomoimasu
no, i don't speak it = iie, hanashimasen
i am sorry but could you say it again= sumimasen. mouichido, onegaishimasu
please speak more slowly = moto jukkuri hanashitte kudasai.
can you halp me? = Testsudate kudasai masu ka?
could you help me? = omegai shimasu?
do you understand? = wakarimasuka
i understand = wakarimasu
i don't understand = wakarimasen.
what does that mean? = kore wa do yu imi desu ka?
note: you might not need to ask:
nihon no kata desuka=are you japanese.
b/c you might not here:
nihonjin dewa arimasen= i'm not japanese.
what is this?= kore wa nandesuka
it's a japanese dictionary= nihon no jisho desu=
the bag is big.=kono kaban wa, ookii desu
Ms. Otaka teaches japanese. =otakasan wa nihongo o oshiemasu

kokodesu=it's here. soredesu=it's there. aredesu=it's over there.
go left= hidariniikimasu. go right= miginiikimasu.

is it far? = toi desu ka?
where is the ____? =_____wa doko desu ka?
there=soko desu. over there=asokodesu. here=kokodesu.
Getting/Giving directions
*note: in japan most streets are not named landmarks, stores and building(first, second,...) are ways to direct someone from a major street or store.
vocabulary needed:...
DINING
before you eat say=itadakimasu.
after you say=gochisousama.
I'm hungry=onskaga peko peko desu. (peko peko the sound of hunger)
please bring us ______ = _______ o motte kite kudasai.
i'd like some_____(i would like)= _________o kudasai.
reserved seat = shitei seki
WEATHER
how is the weather today? = kyo wa donna otenki desuka?
it's very windy = tsuyoi kaze ga futte imasu
is it raining? = ame ga futte imasu ka?
hot, isn't it ?= atsui desu ne?
cold , isn't it? = samui desu ne?
nice day, isn't it? = ii otenki desu ne?
SHOPPING
we go shopping on Saturday. = doyobi ni kaimono ni ikimasu.
can you help me please? = sumimasen, onegai shimasu?
how much? = ikura desu ka?
it's too expense = chotto takai desu
i like this one = kore ga suki desu
STAYING AT A HOTEL
a room with bath = furotsuki no heya
i'd like a room with a bath = furotsuki no heya o kudasai.
a room with twin beds =tsuin bedo no heya
i would like these clothes cleaned = kono fuku o kuringu shite kudasai.(permitting they do that there)
any messages? = kotozuke arimasu ka
Please call me at (8) a. m. = gozen hachiji ni denwa kakete kudasai
may i have my bill please ? = seikyusho o kudasai, dozo.
will you take a traveler's check? = torabera chekku de haratte mo ii desu ka?
i am on vacation = kyuka de kite imasu.
GETTING THE DAY OF THE WEEK
what is today? = kyo wa nanyobi desu ka?
it is friday. = kinyobi desu.
today is ___ = kyo wa ____ desu.
mail call
Please send it to _______ = _______koko e tokette kudasi.
Please write there. = sore o kaitekudasai
NEW: telling where people, things or animals are
Neko wa ue ni taburu ga imasu=the cat is on the endtable.
kuppo wa shita ni taburu ga imasu= the cup is under the entable(ha ^-^ ha, when are you gonna use this one?)
