Angelic Layer is about a young girl named Misaki, who gets drawn into the world of 'Angelic Layer'. A game where dolls fight each other, while being given directives and direction by their owners threw chemical signals given off from the brain. Some might call this telepathy, but I believe it to be chemical signals being transmited and read through the helmets/vidors.
Through this, the users or 'dues' may control their dolls, and dule. These dolls are reffered to as Angels. After leaving the train terminal and arriving in Japan, Misaki sees a Angelic Fight on a big screen just outside the terminal. Misaki is then confronted by Angelic Layers' creator (unknowingly), who makes Misaki buy a bunch of Angelic Layer equiptment. Later on Misaki creates her angel Hikaru!
