Characters:
Totoro- the collective name of the race, coming from the mispronounciation of troll by Mei. Though it normaly means this guy... There is also Chu-totoro and Chibi-totoro. Totoros cannot be seen by grown-ups. They live in giant caphmor trees and are the forest spirits.

Dustbunnies- the balls of living soot that live in old houses. But if a family with children that laugh move in the dustbunnies leave and try to find some peace and quiet. They are very delacite and are crushed easily.

Satsuki Kusakabe- the ten year old main character. She has short hair and fears that her mother may die because of her illness. Though she doesn't tell anyone this. She takes a lot of responsibility for her little sister and does a lot of the household tasks so that her father can work.

Mei Kusakabe- the four-year old sister of Satsuki. She is the one who found the Totoros first and introduced her sister to them. Since she is so young she didn't even know that she was in danger when she was on Totoro's chest and he was yawning, she could have fallen in his mouth.

Professor Kusakabe- the father. He is absent minded and likes to get up late. Despite all his faults he is a caring father and his daughters adore him.

Mrs Kusakabe- the mother. A serene woman who is unfortunatly sick and has to stay in the hospital all the time. She waits very paitenly, or maybe not so patiently, for the day when the doctors say that she can go home to her family.

Nanny- the old lady on the farm next door. Though old she still is healthy and tokk care of the old house before the Kusakabes moved in. Now she looks after the children when their father is in Tokyo working.

Kanta- the ten-year old neighbor. He acts very annoying but is afraid that anyone will notice his caring side. When the girls were waiting for their father in the rain he lent them his umbrella but let his mother think that he lost it.

The Catbus- a bus that looks like a cat with eight legs. The Catbus is the bus that provides transportation for the Totoros. But it also let Mei and Satsuki ride it. And it helped Satsuki look for Mei when she was lost.

Story:
The story starts out with Mei, Satsuki, and their father moving into an old deserted house that is nearer to the hospital than the old one. When Satsuki starts school Mei is left to entertain herself, as she is walking along she sees a trail of acorns and Chibi-Totoro. Seeing that she has noticed him Chibi trys to turn invisible and run away from her but she is hot on his trail. Following him to the giant caphmor tree Mei finds a way in and meets the big Totoro. Over the movie Satsuki is introduced to the Totoros and they help Mei and Satsuki deal with the fact that they might not see their mother ever again.
