Sheeta; the main character. An orphan who is the heir of Laputa, the Flying Castle. She is a sweet girl who was captured and fell from the plane. She was saved by her pendant, a levitation stone. The government is after her for the stone and the second heir is in charge.

Pazu; another orphan who works in the mines. He never knew his mother but his father died when he was little. Pazu is about 14 and lives to find Laputa by flying there.(see Pazu's father) He tends to be happy-go-lucky and works as an assistant to the cheif engineer.

Mushka; a government agent. He has spent his life to finding laputa and his job is just a way to get the power he needs. He is second in line as heir to Laputa. He's deffinently the bad guy of the story.

The General; a soldier who wants promotion. He isn't exactly evil but dumb. He can't even realise that Mushka is using him and his men.

Pazu's father; a man who claims to have seen Laputa. He took a picture of Laputa once but when he returned home he was ridiculed because everyone thought that he faked the piture. He eventually died since everyone didn't like him anymore.

Old Pom; an old man who lives in the mines. He is a friend of Pazu's and knows a lot about levitation stones. POm moved underground to get away from the bustle of above ground.

Ma Dola; head of the Dola Gang sky-pirates. She is a widow and independant on the outside. But inside she promotes Pazu and Sheeta's love.

The Engineer; the man who keeps all the pirate ships going. He works with Ma Dola and appears to be totally under her thumb.

The Dola Boys; Ma Dola's sons. They instantly fell in love with Sheeta and were really nice to her. Their mother is in complete control of them. They don't tend to be very smart but have nice natures.

Story:
Sheeta is arrested by the government and starting to be taken to the capital by air-ship when pirates attack who also seem to be after her. She takes the chance to jump off the ship and plumments to the earth thousands of feet below. But her medalion saves her and lets her drift like a feather right into Pazu's arms. When Ma Dola and Mushka invade the mines where Pazu lives they fall into one of the mine shafts and the levitation stone lets them drift to the bottom. In the mines they meet Pom who tells Sheeta a bit more about her pendant.
When they emerge from the mine they gonernment takes them. By pretending to work with the government Sheeta gets to let Pazu out of government control and he is sent home with a few gold coins. the Dola gang takes Pazu and Ma Dola tells him off for not realizing that Sheeta saved his life by pretending not to care about him. Meanwhile Mushka has told Sheeta what he wants her to do. He wants her to wake a robot from Laputa. She does so but it lays waste to half the city. In the middle of all this Sheeta drops the pendant but is saved by the Dola Gang. Mushka now knows where Laputa is because of the light blue beam that came from Sheeta's pendant that pointed toward Laputa, he also found the levitation stone that Sheeta dropped.
Both the Dola Gang and Mushka find Laputa at the same time. And in a desperate attempt to save the flying castle from Mushka's evil intent Sheeta and Pazu say the spell to release the levitation stone in the flying island. And Laputa is then forever out of human reach because of their sacrifice.
