JOB HISTORY

Croner Publications: from January 1999.

I am currently working at Croner Publications in Kingston as a Quality Controller. The job involves ensuring the quality of Croner’s electronic products and paper amendment services. This has enabled me to work with confidence to tight deadlines with a willingness to take responsibility. I am also very conversant with a wide range of software packages, as I am dealing in part with electronic products. I started in January as a proofreader, but progressed in March. I continue to make use of the skills I gained as a proofreader, with particular reference to attention to detail and thoroughness, as it is part of my responsibilities to look at the content of the publication.

Dixons: spring, summer and autumn 1998.

I worked at Dixon’s Corporate Headquarters preparing a ‘history of Dixons’ project from their archives. I had to assemble the information, organize it and create a template in Quark, before giving a presentation to senior staff. This improved my organizational, liaising and editing experience, while also giving me responsibilities in a highly professional environment.

Stuart Hyslop Editorial Services: summer 1995, 1996 and 1997.

While at University I also worked for part of the summers at Stuart Hyslop Editorial Services, which provides public relations and editorial services. Here I gained valuable office skills, particularly in preparing press releases, balancing my time between projects and handling clients.

EDUCATION

At West Herts College

1998 I gained (March 1998) a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing at West Herts College in Watford. The course gave me a thorough overview of the publishing world; containing modules in DTP, Marketing, Commissioning, Desk editing, Design and Print production. There was a great emphasis on dealing with authors, liaising between departments and time management. I learned proofreading symbols and QuarkXPress, and have a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

At King’s College London

1997 Graduated with a good Upper Second (2.1) Honours degree in Ancient History. This developed my ability to express complicated issues clearly, and to deal objectively with a wide range of different problems. I also wrote a final year dissertation, and honed my oral presentation skills to a high level.

At St James’ Independent School for Boys

1994 ‘A’ Levels – Ancient History A, Law B, English B

1991 GCSEs – 9 (including English and Maths)

LIFE SKILLS AND HOBBIES

I have traveled while a student to a wide range of places, including Nepal and Venezuela. This has taught me a great deal about life, and specially how to plan and organize myself and others in demanding environments. These experiences have enabled me to get on well with a diverse range of people, especially when it was most essential for me to do so.

In addition to my knowledge of QuarkXPress and Adobe Photoshop, I have also successfully completed a CLAIT course, and have experience of using the Internet.

I was a member of the Classics Society at University and still retain a keen interest in history.

My other interests include football and cycling.

I have a clean driving licence.
