Satsuki Kusakabe is a 10 year old girl with short, dark hair. She is most of the time cheerful and enjoys life, even though taking care of her younger sister, Mei. Although Satsuki is most of the time cheerful, she still has her worry side, and her harsh side. She worries about her mother dying and sometimes gets upset. At the end of the movie, you see that Satsuki gets a little upset at Mei because of Mei's whining and also because Satsuki is very worried about her mother.

Mei Kusakabe is 4 years old and is a redhead. People call her a redhead, but her hair really looks light brown. Her hair is tied in tight pigtails most of the time and she was the one that first spotted the Totoros wandering around while her sister, Satsuki was at school and her father, Mr. Kusakabe was working in the house. She is very naughty most of the time but never means harm. Like all young children, she often doesn't know her sense of direction and often gets lost easily. In some parts of the movie, she likes to immatate Satsuki, wishing that she was like her.

Mr. Kusakabe is the caring father of Mei and Satsuki. Being a professor at the university, he is sometimes absentminded and often doesn't brush his hair enough to keep it tidy, sometimes forgets to eat breakfast, and gets up late, having MEI, sometimes wake him up. But other, than that, he is a loving and devoted father, and both the girls love him.

Mrs. Kusakabe is the mother of the 2 girls, Mei and Satsuki. She has become very ill and moved to the hospital of Schichikokuyama. Because of her illness, the Kusakabe's moved to a home near the hospital, near a camphor tree, which had Totoro.

If it hadn't been for these lovable creatures, there would be no movie. The Totoro's are practically the main characters. With the Chibi Totoro (Small Totoro), Chu Totoro (Medium-Sized Totoro) and the giant or regular Totoro, they all take care of young children if they have troubles or anything wrong. All of them are siblings and the giant Totoro is the king of the forest. They're also known as spirits who live in the camphor tree. All of them are really cute as you can see by the picture.
