When You Stop Letting Me Win
By Dana

~This is my very first fanfic. Not my first Utena fic, my first fic EVER. So don't kill me if it sounds like crap. And don't kill me if I never make a sequel or never write anymore (Sorry, I'm lazy). Those of you who know me (3 people maybe) know that I'm kinda a goody goody person so you shouldn't really expect this fic to be bad at all. In fact, it's downright tame. So tame that it might be boring. You have been warned. I hope no one else in the Utena fic world has the name "Dana" cause I've had this name for the whole 9 months that I've had Internet access. Ok time for disclaimers.
Disclaimers: I don't own Shoujo Kakumei Utena, someone else does (Bipapas and that cool lady who draws the manga who's name escapes me at the moment). Don't sue me, I've only got one New Jersey quarter to my name. Without further ado, I present the fic. PS, the characters are about 8 or nine or something like that. ~

Saionji looked over his shoulder towards the direction he came from. He chuckled, thinking of how foolish he was to look back for that brief second. Behind him cherry blossoms swirled in graceful patterns as they fell from the trees in the park. Tiny pink petals floated at the top of the crystal clear pond before him. He hefted a sigh, and out of bad judgment he decided to look back again. He turned his head abruptly and peeked behind himself. Still no one there. "Mochiron." He thought out loud as he turned his attention towards the pond again. Touga was never on time. The two had just finished a Kendo match, Saionji recalled. He thought back, remembering all the details of the match... "You win again." Saionji admitted as he threw his practice sword to the ground, trying to hide his frustration. The fourth consecutive match in a row and he had lost to Touga... again. "I guess so." Touga said, tossing his red hair over his shoulder triumphantly. "Do you want to play again?" he asked with a sparkle in his eye. He had every intention of winning the match yet again. It wasn't that he enjoyed defeating Saionji, it was just the simple fact that he enjoyed being the best. And if being the best meant that he had to practice, then he just had to practice on the only person around at the moment- his best friend Saionji. Saionji wanted to tell him no. He knew that Touga only wanted to beat him so that he could feel as if he was the best. Saionji wasn't sure if Touga was that even that good at Kendo, but he had Touga believing it. Each time they played a game Saionji would lose almost purposely just to let Touga win, just to let him have his way. He knew when his little game had started; he guessed that it was last year, when they were only 8 years old. Then he had always won the matches until one day he actually let Touga win for once. The smile that his best friend gave him that first day that he won was truly captivating, it was heart warming and almost beautiful. He knew that he'd want to see his friend smiling like that forever, he knew that he could almost always enjoy seeing his friend smile, even if it meant loosing his own happiness. "OK," Saionji finally agreed after a long pause "I'll play again only if we can go to the park and throw stones in the pond afterwards. Maybe you'll win that game, too." Saionji gave Touga a sly grin. "Sure!' Touga agreed. "I'll meet you there right after this game."... And that was it. Now all Saionji could do was wait. It's so typical of him to be late like this, Saionji thought through narrowed eyelids. He always gets what he wants. Saionji turned his head one last time, this time he saw his best friend peering over his shoulder with a wry grin plastered on his face. Saionji blushed slightly, ashamed that he had been thinking such appalling thoughts about his best friend. "Ready?" Touga inquired, handing Saionji some pebbles. "I was looking for some really nice rocks because... because I know how much you love doing this." Touga fumbled. "Arigatou." Saionji bowed, palming the three small pebbles. Touga threw one pebble and it went considerably far into the pond. Saionji threw his pebble and it didn't go nearly as far as the stone Touga had previously threw. "How'd you like kendo practice earlier?" Touga turned to his confidant expecting an answer. "It was OK," Saionji sighed. He wrinkled his nose as he threw another pebble that also didn't gain much distance. Then he added with a hint of sarcasm "But when are you going to let me win?" Touga gave his friend a shocked look. "When you stop letting me win." He knows?! Saionji gasped as he threw his pebble into the pond. The small rock skipped six times in the water before sinking to the bottom and becoming one with the sand. Touga threw his last pebble, which skipped once in the water, not going very far at all. "Looks like you win." Touga stated. Before Saionji could turn around to ask questions Touga was gone. All Saionji saw behind him were the sakura petals from earlier, falling like lost angels to the ground where Touga once stood. Saionji's lips quivered for a moment before curving upwards and forming a captivating, heart warming and almost beautiful smile. Just like you... this is what it feels like to win?
