Q. Is it illegal to dock?
A.. Tail docking is prohibited by lay persons. Only veterinary surgeons are allowed to dock and this should only be for therapeutic reasons. Vets who continue to routinely dock risk disciplinary action and could be struck off the professional register but cannot be prosecuted in a court of law.
Q. Why do we still see so many docked breeds?
A. Because prize-winning potential is diminished in an undocked animal and therefore stud fees and puppy prices are affected. Unfortunately, The Kennel Club and show judges continue to favour a docked dog over an undocked one in a traditionally docked breed.
Q. Can docking cause the dog any problems?
A. Yes. It causes the puppy pain, even at a very young age, and scar tissue is often left that never heals. Problems can also occur later in life and the tail then has to be amputated under local anaesthetic.
Q. What can I do about it?
A. If you are thinking of buying a puppy, you should make enquiries and only buy from a breeder who does not believe in docking. If this is not possible, and you have the opportunity to speak to the breeder before the litter is born, then you can request that your puppy's tail is left intact. The more demand there is for undocked dogs, the more acceptable they will become. You can also help by getting out there in the show ring and proudly showing your dog, tail and all. Many more dogs with tails are now being shown and are even beginning to win major awards!
