What is Kisekae?
The Kisekae Set System (KiSS for short) is an addictive computer toy popularly known as 'Virtual Paper Dolls'. KiSS is freeware and originated, like all good things, from Japan. (Kisekae is the japanese word for 'dress-up') For this reason, most KiSS dolls are anime-based, and a surprising number of them are based on Sailor Moon.
To use Kisekae, you'll need a viewing program and at least one KiSS data set, which contains a doll and clothes to dress her/him in. The sets are in LZH format, which is a type of compression (like ZIP). The program used to decompress this type of file is LHA.
Thankfully, KiSS viewing programs decompress the sets for you, so you don't need to worry about what is inside each LZH file unless you want to make a doll of your own. But just in case, each set is made up of: pictures with transparent backgrounds (called cels), a palette file, and a configuration file which tells the KiSS viewer where to put the cels.
Now that you know what's up, you'll need a Kisekae Viewer to display the dolls you'll soon be collecting. I suggest either WKiss or PlayFkiss if you're using Win95/98. You can get viewers for other systems from The Big KiSS Page run by Dov, the King of KiSS. He also has info on how to make your own dolls if you're interested.
Now, go back to the main KISS dolls page and download a few KiSS data sets. Once they're unzipped, they should be of the file type LZH. Now this is important: don't double-click on them! You probably have a de-compressing program like Winzip which will automatically de-LZH them if you do, and you'll be left with about 50 little files. Instead, run your new KiSS viewer and open the data sets from inside it.
Once you've played around a little (just drag and click, it's really easy), you'll notice that on some dolls, not all the clothes come off at first. This is so that sensitive people don't remove a doll's undies by accident. After a few tugs they usually come off though, so be warned: some kiss dolls _do_ contain nudity. And some contain a LOT. ^_-
FKiss, which you may hear of, is a simple language added on to normal Kisekae which lets you put sound, moving parts and a little more user interaction into the dolls. Fkiss2 and 3 take FKiss and add even more effects and flexibility. The most popular FKiss effect is blinking eyes. *Kawaii*
