-----You had just met your end by the hands of a drunken driver, and you suddenly found yourself standing before the pearly gates that led to a magnificent kingdom. But they were closed, and across from them you saw a desk manned by an angel, and the plaque on the desktop read as: "Saint Peter." -----"Well, bummer." You thought, having to come to Saint Peter at the tender age of fifteen. -----When you approached Saint Peter, he looked up and smiled. -----"Ah!" He exclaimed good-naturedly. "Here so soon?" -----Blushing with embarrassment, you replied: "I, uh... Couldn't help it, um... Sir?" -----He responded with an amused chuckle and moved beside you so he could encircle his arm over your shoulders, where he then told you: "No need for formalities. In fact, allow me to get right to the point: you died early, lad. And everyone has the God-given right to live long enough to get a clear idea about what's right and wrong before being judged." -----"Does that mean what I think it means?" You asked, feeling surprise and anxious expectation. -----"That it does." He told you, then added: "But your life as you knew it has ended. However, you can start a whole new life without the need to be born." -----"But..." You began to protest but trailed off when his eyes met yours sternly. -----"I know, I know..." He began to explain, as if reading your mind. "But that's how the system works; new start, new life. Reversing space and time while manipulating and subsequently changing the course of events simultaneously with countless people causes problems that even He cannot avoid." -----You bow your head, and you remember your family. Your memories of them are very clear and poignant to you. -----Sighing, he said: "I know how you feel, lad; this happens more times than I can count. But you've been sufficiently good for your age and seem to strongly believe in how you lived, up until the time of your death. So..." He turned you aside so you were left facing the gates, which began to open. "You are allowed into Heaven, if you feel that you must leave the world behind so soon. But should you choose to live again, you'll still be able to come back here to see your family and friends after you die." And as an afterthought, he added: "Well, unless you're not quite as good as you were the first time around." -----You took some time to give it some serious thought and, while there were so many uncertainties, you decided to live another life. And when you gave Saint Peter your answer, he smiled brightly and said: "A wise decision. You do not know how precious a good person like yourself is upon the world, for good people can help inspire others to follow their example. And that, my lad, makes more people happy in the end..." -----And before you knew it, someone, or something, picked you up from behind and swept you away. You felt a rush, and vertigo, as well as the ambient light that made seeing anything impossible. And just as suddenly as it had all started, you suddenly found yourself placed lightly upon your feet. Your senses, upon coming to life, quickly registered that your life was going to be substantially different from before; even as the beating of wings became fainter behind you. |
