Once upon a time there were two boys who dreamed of becoming the most famous treasure hunters that ever lived. They left home to find fame and fortune as soon as they reached adulthood, and they planned to aim high and make a name for themselves. And so they decided to go after the faery's treasure. Rumor had it that no treasure hunter before them had ever been successful in taking the treasure from the forest, nor had anyone that entered the heart of the forest ever return. It was the perfect goal for two thrill-seekers, such as themselves. However, they reached the heart of the forest without a problem and, even as they traveled deeper into the forest, they became bored and unimpressed. The only thing that interested them, for a time, were the ethereal creatures that inhabited the heart of the forest. Everything, from dragonflies to frogs, looked like faeries. That's why the heart of the forest was nicknamed Faerieland. Then they happened upon a clearing. Within was a shallow spring, and above it was floating crystal that lit up the entire area with its own light. They became excited at the sight of it, for they knew that it had to be what they had been searching for. They cast aside their supplies and rushed toward the crystal, their gallop through the shallow spring water disturbing the tranquility that once existed there. When they reached the crystal, they knelt down and regarded it with awe. It was then that they both noticed how nice it felt to be in its presence, and commented on it. But what they did not notice, so mesmerized were they by the crystal, was their clothing, as everything was dissolved and carried away by a non-existent wind. By the time that they noticed the absence of their clothing, they also realized that their bodies had changed. Instead of how they normally would have reacted, they remained calm and regarded each other. In their new, musical voices, they spoke of the crystal's magic, and how they felt like they were being embraced by mother nature herself. No other experience in their lives could compare to it. "So this is why no one has ever returned." One of them eventually stated. "I don't wish to leave this place, either." Said the other. They smiled and continued to bask in the crystal's light, as new residents of Faerieland. Their past as human men were far from forgotten, yet so much less important than their future as human faeries. |
