Here is a list of formats that movie files come in, I don't have everything in each of these different formats, but I thought I'd post it up just for a reference. To check your DVD players compatability with some of these discs, please visist: www.vcdhelp.com, also make sure to check if your DVD player can play CD-R's.

SVCD - Super Video Compact Disc, superb quality compared to a VCD. Make sure your DVD player can play SVCDs at vcdhelp.com. Playable on PC only with a DVD-rom. All of my SVCD's are divx files converted to MPEG2 format.

VCD - Video Compact Disc in MPEG or .DAT format. Playable on all PC's and most DVD players. The quality ranges depending on the source that the VCD was created. Several VCD's were either recorded from video or were made by converting divx files into MPEG or DAT format for VCD's. Please note that when played on DVD players parts around the border are bound to be cut-off from the screen unless the CD was encoded with a black border so that when played on a DVD player, the whole picture is displayed on the television screen.

Divx - Anime digisubs (divx - .avi files) burned onto CD and playable on computer w/a downloaded divex codec and a program like media player - both can be downloaded for free. I have heard that they recently that they have stand alone DVD-players on the market that can play divx files, so check your DVD player's compatability if you plan to watch these using your stand alone player.

RM & RMVB - Real-One Media file. Playable only on PC with the Real One Player program which you can download for free. RM files tend to have lower quality picture

MKV - New format that requires the MKV codec which you must download

MPEG - Anime files in MPEG format burned onto a CD, if the format is listed as an MPEG file, it is not a VCD, and is only playable on PC or on certain DVD players that support MPEG playback without it having to be in VCD format.

MP3 - songs files are in MP3 format and burned onto CD

OGG - Don't know too much about this format either, but I believe you can only play it using windows media player.

For sample screen captures from the different formats, click here. When it says "raw" in the cell box marked "Subtitle", that means that there aren't any subtitles. "Soft" subs can removed, and "hard" subs are permanately on the screen.
