In a brutal realm of demon kings, power hungry warlords, and the most hideous monsters ever imagined, emerges an equally brutal hero. The destiny of our hero, Gatts, was written in blood since his birth. Found on a muddy road under the body of his mother, who had been hung, he was taken in by a group of mercenaries.
Gatts is taught how to fight by Gambino, a warrior whose wife raised Gatts. After a series of tragic mishaps, one of which is the death of his mentor; Gatts is driven out of the group. He becomes a wandering mercenary fighting for who ever pays him.
It is during a siege on a castle that he first catches the eye of Griffus the young enigmatic leader of group of mercenaries called the Band of the Hawk. Griffus tries to recruit Gatts in to the group and is immediately turned down. Gatts has not forgotten what happen when he was in a group. Griffus challenges Gatts to a dual, if he wins he goes free, if he looses he must join them. He then looses, and it is with the Band of the Hawk that the adventure begins and tales of how he gets the brand on his neck and the evil that are the four Demon lords are told.
