Women used 1/2 to 1 inch thick wooden souls called patters to keep their shoes from getting dirty as illustrated here. The soul of the shoe was made of wood or cork, and were common with church dwellers because they were not made to dance in.(see #2 on "thanks")

Wealthier women had their shoes lined thinly with a soft leather and even satin. These shoes were more of a slipper than a shoe to use around the market. (see #1 on "thanks")

Men wore boot for the most part, but later they started to wear "crakows" which were long pointed shoes. They became so popular from the heel to the tip of the toe got to be two and a half feet long and it needed to be attatched to the knee with a chain to hold up. That's getting straight to the point!(see #2 and 3 on "thanks")
