Define Business Ethics
Mood:  cheeky
The nature of business ethics was incorporated into society as away of implementing a structured protocol of how businesses should function to benefit both the supplier as well as the consumer. Ethical practices in business were needed based on different circumstances such as labor laws, envionmental pollution, monopolies, and the overall attitude of the employer. Before laws were incorporated into busineses companies did as they pleased without any accountability of their actions. Business ethics was established by the government to incorporate guidelines of how businesses practices should be structured and monitored. Before governmental intervention there were no laws implemented to define how businesses should be conducted. The implementation of rules and regulation along with business ethics helped regulate and monitor employers to abide by the new laws in order to remain consumer and enviornmentally friendly. Business ethics does not only effect how business is conducted but it also protects the employees to feel comfortable in the types of business transactions the conduct on a daily basis. For example I work at San Francisco health Plan which is a non- profit state mandated HMO who provides healthcare for approximately 50,000 low-income and undocumented residents of San Francisco. Our mission is " providing superior, affordable healthcare that emphasizes prevention and promotes healthy living, we strive to improve the quality of life for the people of San Francisco" although most of my employment history has been within healthcare organizations which tend to set high standards of patient care there are other types of businesses who have shifted from ethical practices.

Another aspect of business ethics is the differentiation of business which is to promote capital and ethics which aid in right and wrong. If you think about it how can any business be morally correct when the primary goal is capital? The evolution of business ethics has come along way with great resistance from multi-billion dollar companies and corporations who's primarily purpose is to monopolize the world for capital gain and reconition of power making it impossible for smaller business owners to compete. Another fact is big businesses pay little taxes and receive perks by funding campaign contributions.

Response to a Symposium (Desmond Tutu)
What makes me agee with Demond Tutu analysis of forgiveness is based upon my Christian belief which teaches the power of prayer which allows one to forgive and takes the pressure of hostile feelings one may have. I have learned that the power of prayer can help relieve stress. If one would hold unto bad experiences that one could not change and allowed this experience power to dominate one's life how could one live half-hearted? Another aspect of Christianity is to pray for enemy which helps to eleviate any negative feelings to may hold onto. The true measure of world peace would be forgiveness, equality, and universal laws.

Three Symposium Analysis
In the Sunflower Symposiums each individual idea takes on a new perspective of viewpoints. With each entry you learn different things such as relgious beliefs, occurances of genocide and imprisonment in different eras in history. What makes the writers experience unique is the unwavering ethics of forgiveness. I agree with many of the authors statements of how we should not hold onto the past mentally based on the detrimental factors it imposes of the individuals who survived to tell their encounter to embrace the future. Harold Kusher implies the refusal to gives someone power over yourself is to define one's self as a victim.(186) While Jose Hobday states "No one, memory, should have power to hold us down, to deny us peace".(175)Which means that in life we all will have to overcome things that may deeply hurt us us mentally but the only way to overcome these obstacles is to learn from our experiences and forgive without holding any resentful feelings. I agree with Hans Habe when he says murder is unforgivable but the ability to forgive one for such a horrendous crime is a true act of love; but love, justice, or punishment alone cannot replace life. With all of the turmoil in the world today it is obvious we have not learned much from the previous events in history which means that we as a nation has accepted the principles of genocide as a mean to kill mercilessly for power and individual gain.

What I've learned and suprised me about the Sunflower
Mood:  chillin'
The Sunflower taught learning lessons of history, forgivess, pentinence, morality, and ethics. What amazed me most about the Holocaust was that no other country tried to intervene until the end. The reason why I find this so disturbing is that we as Americans seem to always noses in other countries problems but why wasn't there any intervention until the end? Basically I feel that we as Americans have not learned anything from the destruction of the Holocaust because we continue to exhibit these same types of attitudes while going to war. If you think about it in war who are the people who suffer at the hands of their leader? Its the people of the lower economic status either dying or fighting for either monetary gain or power. I also don't see how the other races stood by and watched what was happening to the Jews. Did they convey the mind set that they were exempt from this type of behavior? How did they know that their ethnic group wouldn't be singled out next? It is truly unbelievable how other races were able to function with all of the death, destruction, and carage around them portraying acceptability. I can think of hundreds of questions to ask those who watched this happen but it's very hard to define acceptable answers. What suprised me the most about the Sunflower was the all of the additional viewpoints of diverse individuals which gave many different perspectives, ideas, to help you formalize and create your own opinion. The religious aspects had a great impact on the difference in view point which I believe was very detrimental to how diverse people are and how religous beliefs also shapes morality.Overall the Sunflower was a great book written so vivdly that the reader could picture the events as they occured. This book gives the reader incentive to either want to learn more about history and how it intermingles with current events in the world today or continue to be oblivious (ignorant) to social issues.

Sunflower 3-43
Mood:  crushed out
The Sunflower is an historical account of the Holocaust during the Nazi regime. Hiltler aimed to create a totalitarian society without Jews. He blamed Jews for societal problems that not only effected Jews but everyone. The Jews were stripped of everything from homes, businesses, valuables, rights, dignity, social status, and life. They were at first banishes to ghetto were their children were hunted as prey and killed while the parents were working. Hitler exploited the Jews in every dispicable way possible with no opposition from anyone...they remained silent as all non Jews watched from the sideline.

Response to the Sunflower
The sunflower brought a tremedous light on a subject which isn't acknowledged as much as slavery. The Halocaust was such a horrifying event in history to not only the suvivors, but to the new generations who have little or no knowledge of prominent historical facts. The Sunflower made me realize how little I knew about the Halocaust and my preconceived notions of what I was taught in grade school. The purpose of the Halocaust was to create a totalitarian society by the exploitation and execution the Jewish people who was blamed for the misfortunes of the Germans; using the most derogatory and inhumane practices. Through Weisental's experience we learn alot about conformity, relgion, sympathy, remorse, forgiveness, silence, death, destruction, hatred and the day to day struggle with your own psyche as to what was you moral obligation to your people and person who's asking forgiveness although he aided in the demise of your people.

The Children in the Ghetto
The Jewish children who lived in the ghetto were left home unsupervised while their parents left everyday for work. These children weren't childlike in attitude the were mature individuals who had had to be alert and attentive to every situation. They were considered as unwanted entities of no value who could be taken away at anytime by ss officers and killed in gas chambers.

The Ghetto children reminds me to the concept of the survival of the fittest whereas only the strongest and smartest would prevail. Ghetto children tend to be more mature to aspects of the world because they tend to see unfortunate events of poverty, hunger, murder and the day to day struggle in society.

Obedience
Mood:  chatty
Obedience is a very profound concept. If you think about it obedience and conformity goes hand in hand with eachother. As babies we learn from our parents the conformities of society therefore promoting obedience. It depends on what position you take while arguing your viewpoints they can range from being contrary to law, commerce, corporations, societal values, moral obligations, etc. I believe if there was no obedience there would be no accountability for our own actions. This would allow so much more corruption, crime, murder, death, increasing the empowerment of the wealthy, corporations, and more inequality for the lower class of people. Obedience can become dangerous when authoritative figures begin to act and behave above the law we typically see these types of behavior with celebrites such as Martha Stewart with her insider trading scandal with the now defunct Enron, politicians Dick Chaney with Haiburton, corrupt cops who lied, planted false, evidence, created false reports, and tormented some of the citizens of Oakland in the Riders cases, and the media ran by corporations who falsify views to reflect there own political opinions therefore deceiving the public while promoting bias attitudes.

How and When to Summarize, Paraphase, and Quote
I believe that you usually need to summarize a paper or essay when your audience or viewer has no knowledge of the topic. This helps them with the ability to overview the main concepts or ideas that are pertinent to understanding your essay. The difference between paraphasing and quoting is that when you quote you use the exact text of another author citing them as a source to help support your own ideas. You only need to quote someone else when you can't support your essay any other way.Quoting can be done directly and indirectly no matter which concept you use you must never quote without giving the originator credit for his/her material. Paraphasing is kind of like quoting but the only difference is that you can breakdown the original quoted material in your own words for a better understanding this technique is a great concept especially when you read literature which was written in earlier time periods the complexity of language is formatted differently since then literature has evolve tremendously as language. When paraphrasing you must also cite your source because even though you have changed the original text to a new more understanding version the original idea is not your own.

Late Entry: Crazy Thursday
Mood:  don't ask
Thursday February 3rd I received a phone call from a neighbor stating that my daughter had an accident and she broke her tooth. I know to you this may not be such a big deal. After receiving this information I was in such a state of panic because she was home alone and her pants got caught in the dining room chair leg while carrying her backpack; she fell and hit her mouth on the granite counter top cracking her tooth. She couldn't get in contact with any family members so she walked aroung the corner to my neighbors house for help. What made me so frustrated is that I felt I should've been more assessible in case emergencies happen. My neighbor took very good care of until I was able to get to Hayward an hour later form San Francisco....Later on that evening my daughter and I went to her grandmother's house, on my way back home I went to the gas station were the station attendant was involved in a heated arguement with patron which was eventually resolved by the manager. I paid for my purchases and proceed to my car were another station agent is asking a panhandler to leave Chevron's premises, but he refuses. Another customer interferes in the conversation and one thing lead to the next and customer pulled out a knife. At this time I got into the car and decided to go to another gas station. Everything here seems be the typical gas station experience. A few minutes later I notice a teen aged girl walking down the street trying to avoid this car who is following her. I watched her as she proceeded toward her destination but the car kept trying to block her path. At first I thought that this could've been a boyfriend dispute so I headed on my way to the freeway when my intuition told me to turn around. I go back to last place I remembered seeing the girl and she was at the store talking to someone who seemed to work there but her persuer had his car in park waiting for her. I got out of my car and asked the girl was she okay and if she needed a ride home. I know you're not supposed to give strangers a ride but something within me knew this situation wasn't right. The girl had no idea who the man was following her I was just glad to see her make home safely.
