PUPPY UPDATE, March 11, 2006: Puppy #1 died during the night. I'm not sure whether Lucy had layed on her and perhaps suffocated her or whether something was possibly wrong with her. She had seemed a bit weak when she was born, but had seemed to be fine later. The second puppy has seemed strong from the start and is already developing a round little tummy, indicating it is getting plenty of nourishment. With only one pup left now, the family who had put down a deposit already will get her, provided she is what they want.

PUPPY UPDATE, March 11, 2006, #2: I took Lucy and the remaining pup to the vet this morning to have them checked out, especially since this was a prolonged labor and delivery and to make sure the remaining pup is healthy after losing the one this morning. The pup checked out fine, other than its temp being a little low (that may have been from the ride in the car and coming in and out of the outdoors). The vet agreed that Lucy may possibly have layed on and suffocated the other pup, but there is no way to know for sure why it died.

PUPPY UPDATE, March 16, 2006: Puppy #2 is now demanding her mom less and is more content to burrow into the folds of the blanket where I guess she's pretty snuggly warm. Sometimes, though, I go in and look in her box and wonder, "Where is she?" :-) Sometimes she rolls between the blanket and the side of the box and gets stuck lying on her back. She gets frustrated when that happens and becomes a bit vocal. So then either me and/or Lucy come to her rescue :-) . She gets the hiccups at times, which can seem a bit funny when we're holding her. She also kind of cues in her sleep at times and has twitching movements. She has been doing a lot of growing already, initially she was around 6" long and now she's at least 8" long.

PUPPY UPDATE, March 22, 2006: By yesterday Puppy #2's eyes were starting to open, and today they are even more open. She is becoming a bit of an energetic wanderer and even managed to get out of the nesting box a couple days ago. Being our only pup currently, of course she is getting lots of attention and loving by each of us. Yesterday I took the pup to the nursing home where I work, and the residents cuddled her and made over her. She helped to make their day.

PUPPY UPDATE, March 28, 2006: Puppy #2 is growing cuter and more agile every day. Her eyes are now fully open, she can now hear, she tries to bark, she's walking steadier every day (initially they crawl), and today she started wanting to play. Having Mama Lucy all to herself, she is becoming quite a butterball! Her baby teeth have now broken through the gums and she is taking interest in wanting to gum a few pieces of puppy food. She cuddles with the stuffed toy we got her and was chewing on it some today. She also did some playful growling while wanting to play today. We cuddle her often, and Mama Lucy spends a lot of time with her also. Now that she's taking interest in playing, we will make an effort to play with her, since she doesn't have siblings to play with.

PUPPY UPDATE, April 1, 2006: The past few days Puppy #2 has started wanting to play, play attacking the stuffed toy we got her and making playful growls and barks. She is quite agile now and can even run after her mom when she's hungry. Lucy reaches the point of not wanting to nurse by three weeks, probably in part because the baby now has her baby teeth. We now have to coax her to lie down and let the baby nurse because our vet wants the pups to nurse for six weeks. By this age, though, milk doesn't fully satisfy the baby. So she is also getting a mush of moistened puppy food now.

PUPPY UPDATE, April 10, 2006: Puppy #2 is very playful now. We gently play wrestle with her while she makes playful growling noises. She is incredibly cute. She is now taking a LOT of interest in my three cats, much to their chagrin! Over the weekend Puppy #2 had her first experience being outside. Our large yard was a bit intimidating for such a little tike. Our other dogs took interest in her, but Lucy still watches out to protect her. We had family visiting over the weekend who cuddled her a lot and even rocked her to sleep. Puppy #2 is now fully able to bark and barked at our visitors as they came inside after our being gone for awhile.

PUPPY UPDATE, April 18, 2006: Puppy #2 saw our vet today for her first set of shots and first dose of preventative dewormer. She weighed in at 4 lbs., so likely she will be a medium-sized sheltie. Our vet found her to be quite healthy. Puppy #2's eyes have now changed from blue to brown. Her personality is that of a friendly explorer, much like Mama Lucy. She has several stuffed toys she likes to cuddle and play with and also she will try to drag around anything she may find laying around, even if it is bigger than she is! She has discovered our housecats, much to their chagrin! One of our cats, however, will play with her some. She is a very beautiful and loving pup, and we are enjoying her immensely. I think we'll shed a few tears when this one goes to her new home!

PUPPY UPDATE, April 24, 2006: Puppy #2 continues to be such a darling and gets cuter every day. I think she has grown quite a bit this week. We joke, though, that right now she's mostly growing hair and ears! It seems like initially that their ears are proportionately too small - so now they are catching up. Also, her hair has thickened up quite a bit, and for whatever reason it initially becomes longer in a line running down the back. She becomes more agile every day, and earlier today was even running laps around the living room! Guess she had a lot of energy to burn off. She continues to be very fond of stuffed toys and has a large stuffed dog she mostly likes to sleep on. We continue to enjoy cuddling and playing with her.

PUPPY UPDATE, May 1, 2006: Puppy #2 has grown quite a bit this past week, both longer and taller. One of our cats does play with her - they bat at each other with their front paws. Chewing is probably her favorite activity right now, as she continues to cut baby teeth. She is quite fond of stuffed toys, that she playfully attacks, and of cat toys (rattle balls and a stuff mouse that turns in circles). She nearly always naps on a large stuffed dog. We play with and cuddle her often - she is such a beautiful little girl. She is full of energy and spunk and seems to fear nothing (for better or worse......). This Friday Puppy #2 will be eight weeks old and will then be ready to go home with her new family. She has added a lot of excitement and joy to our home, and I'm sure she'll do the same in her new home.

PUPPY UPDATE, May 7, 2006: Today Puppy #2 went to her new home, joining a family in Springfield, MN.

PUPPY UPDATE, May 15, 2006: Heard today from Puppy #2's new owner, saying, "Things are going well with Maggie! As you can see John decided he liked the name Maggie so that is her new name. They are road buddies already! She already comes when called and we are teaching her to sit, come, etc. She is getting the idea of going to the bathroom outside and will sometimes go by the door and sit to let us know. We are catching onto her subtle clues also! Maggie is quite smart and like you said, not timid in the least. In fact, sometimes is quite bold."

Our shelties and chow chow are part of our family, well loved and very socialized. We have a large fenced yard for our dogs to run and play in, and our dogs have access to dog houses and our garage. In our garage is a fenced off area with an insulated, heated nesting box for Lucy's pups; however, her winter litters have typically spent most of their upbringing inside our home. Sabra has a separate, two-room house for raising her pups. Our dogs frequently visit inside our home for love and play with our family.
