M3 gives you a bucketfull of new units, and most of them have unique artwork. Oftentimes units are part of an upgrade chain, where they serve the same purpose but at different points in time. In Civilization III units can't become outdated without being part of an upgrade chain, which is why I've implemented bizarre stuff like Frigates upgrading to Ironclad. Bizarre it is, but it is better than having Frigate, Ironclad and Destroyer in the build list simultaneously, despite the first two having been outdated.

Because spearmen now requires access to Copper to be built, civs that don't have access to it can build phalanxes instead, but they need iron to do so. Phalanxes are better attackers than spearmen, and they're better defenders than archers, but they're more expensive to build than either unit so from a strategic perspective it's a mistake to build phalanxes if you can build both the other types. The graphics are from the greek Hoplite unit, so the necessary files are in the main mod file. [No Artist]
