One of my children picked up Cinderella and asked me to read it to them. I suppose I was feeling a little more creative than usual that day. As I read it, I decided the story didn't make sense the way it was told. There are missing pieces. The Prince is not a character, we know nothing about him. If women today are looking for their Prince Charming based on these stories, no wonder they don't have a clue. These men do nothing but show up and kiss them. Or put on the shoe. When I read that story, my mind kept going. I feel like we don't know anything about them. Does Cinderella remember her mother? What is she afraid of ? What does she want out of life? Why did she sneak and go to the ball when she knew she wasn't supposed to? Does she sneak away a lot? Or did something draw her out of the house that night? And most importantly, what was it really like when the prince showed up at her house. When he saw her dressed in the rags, all ugly and dirty, didn't he think, for at least one second, "What happened to the princess? Where's the gown? Where's the coach and the slaves? Why did you run out on me? In the movie and the book, he simply puts the shoe on, lifts her up into the carriage, and they live "happily ever after." Now I do know that it's not a real story. . .but you shouldn't teach kids or adults that the story ends when you meet, "prince Charming." That's when the story begins. Then, you have you learn how to deal with each other. You have to learn that a girl is more than a pretty gown. There's a lot of stuff underneath it, and you're not going to like all of it. You have to learn how to compromise, accept each other, trust each other. The meeting is the easy part. It started with Cinderella. That's about. . .50 pages maybe. This happened in October, November something. I haven't spent that much time on it, but once I have finished Cinderella, I have plans to work on Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I'll give you one hint- they don't all end up with their supposed Prince Charming's. |

Timeline |
If you’ve looked at the list of projects from 2004, 2005, you will see why I stopped writing this. I think I was in the middle of the novel known as T.Wilks, when I started writing this. It’s somewhere near thirty pages- your average short story length, but unfinished because I had more pressing and personally relevant projects. Also, the following year I went back to school full time and in 2008 started a series of plays which I will be directing as well as writing. When I have the time, I will get back to it, some time later I may post some of it. I could also turn it into a screenplay. Only time will tell. |
