A Series of Biblical Plays

Inspiration

Bible

Having already written “Glory” and the series of church pageants (see By Genre) I felt the need to continously do more, because for a Christian, Bible study is a never ending learning process, and I learn the best when writing. Some biblical stories lend themselves well to be acted out, and acting gives others great opportunities to learn as well.

Summary

This is now showing to be three different series.

a.-extreemley low budget for performance in church with extreemly limited staging and cast.

b.- power and Glory type high scenes, highly entertaining, some sections cut out.

c.- High study- mostly exactly word for word.

Likely I will write one of each, mostly for each book. I would like to do all word for word, but that would be highly un-entertaining and unvaluable in many cases. The wonderful old testament stories of the kings- David, Solomon, 1st and 2nd Kings can’t be done with a small cast because of the army. It would be unbelievably cheap to tell the story of the Israelites with less than 50 people, and as I want to get a large portion of the community together, it just can’t be done without a large performance space and that means taking it out of the church, which was my initial intended performance venue. To keep that, I will select some small scenes and set them aside for 20 minute church performances, but the bible to it’s fullest, needs a full stage. What gets cut I intend to work out mostly through rehersal, but I intend to have a full script atleast that is based on the bible word for word.

Timeline

2003 Scripts written for Amos and Hosea

2005: Scripts wirtten for Daniel, Esther, Nehemiah, Obadiah,

2006- Joel

2008- 2 kings, 1 samuel, 2nd samuel, 1 kings, genesis, July 22, 2008- Exodus in progress.

May 2008- while looking to finish Cinderella- see Happily Ever After, I came across my script for Esther. Having just watched the feature film on the subjet, “A Night with the King” I was curious to see the similarities, to see how I imagined it. I was reminded of how much fun it could be, how good it would be to do something that powerful with the children, and as I was looking for a new meaningful job, I couldn’t escape the fact that I had a valuable idea and the power to make it happen. So this project has morphed into CBL Live! And I hope to hold auditions on August 15, 2008 for our first play, Esther.

Soundrack

I believe some of Glory will come to life here, because once you’ve envisioned something cool, beautiful, and awesome, it’s hard to go back on it. The sound track of Glory is still highly troubled, but some songs I may finally get around to fixing- improving, others will play limited.

Other music will come from old traditional inspirational hymms- as there are many specific mentions of songs with words, or simply as “and they sang a song of praise”

Nehemiah, also is a musical, because the building of the temple motif has been simplified with a version of “I’ve been working on the railroad”
