Inspiration

I love reading Christian Fiction, but there isn’t enough of it.  Lots of it isn’t written well. Most of it is written by whites, and often tells the history of the Oppressors of my people.  Quality Christian Fiction that I can relate to is rare.  This is an example of one.  Another example is Kendra Norman- Bellamy’s One Prayer Away and Sharon Ewell Foster’s Abraham’s Well

What I most love about this story is it is realistic Christian Fiction romance, it’s set in Africa, it deals with the ethnic/religious tensions in Kenya and the environment.  It is full of interesting information, twists, turns and surprises.

Plot Summary

Laurel Binet looks forward to her assignment working with renowned animal activist Joan Doyle on Ndovu  in Kenya where she will be working with a troop of Baboons.  Her small plane pilot, Darren Grant who she is attracted to, warns her that Joan Doyle is not a good person. Laurel is determined to do her job, but finds it harder than she initially expected as Joan is not a people person. She curses the ‘infidels’ who threaten the Baboon’s territory.   Darren is convinced she’s doing the wrong thing- she should be helping the starving peoples, not the baboons. Laurel is convinced that God means us to care for all of his creatures- there must be a way to help the people and the animals.  But she’s up against old beliefs and unforgiving nature. She experiences drought as well as the excessive rainy season.  She witnesses an outbreak of cholera.  And in the end her life is threatened by a former ally.  But she finds a way to bring aid to all.

May 2010

Read the novel, adapted the screenplay in just about a month.  It was often too easy and I became bored, hungering for my own original projects.  It is certainly not perfect, but I am happy with what I have for now. If I found someone interested, I could have the script ready in a month or less. The complications are not with the script itself, but with the budget- shooting in Africa, shooting with Baboons, and the highly Christian nature make it an unlikely sell for Hollywood.  I knew that when I started it, but I wanted to try it anyway, because I like it, and there’s nothing wrong with hoping.  If I find someone who would be interested, I have the script available.
