DIRECT CONNECT (Review from .net Magazine)

Direct Connect is the latest release in a long line of utilities that enable file sharing accross the internet. While there's nothing new about this concept per se, the way NeoModus (www.neo-modus.com) has gone about it is rather novel. Instead of processing everyone through a central server, users can connect to smaller "hubs" instead. These hubs are listed on public servers allowing anyone to join, and they're designed to be subject-specific meeting points for users with similar interests. Once successfully to such a hub, you can share files or chat with other users. This last point shouldn't be underestimated, and there are plenty of healthy chats underway on pretty much every hub. One thing that you need to be aware of is that you are responsible for the files you make availiable for others to access. If you don't have the copyright holders permission to distrubute the files in question, you are breaking the law. Even so, there are a lot of files on these hubs that are freely distributable and, to that end, such a network can be extremely useful.

DIRECT CONNECT SCREAMING ANGEL'S VIEW- -

Direct Connect is a super program, transfer of file is as fast as KaZaA Lite and if you can find the "hubs" to connect to the content can be great. One of the main problem is the hub requirements. Many of the best, highly populated hubs you need to be sharing 1GB or more of data, which can be very hard for someone like a modem user. The reason for this is to try and stop "leechers" taken files off the hub, without giving anything back. Unfortunately, for a new computer user or modem user the automatic disconnection from hubs several times, can be very off putting, especially if you have not yet learned the basics of how the program works. However, finding hubs is very good, the hub search feature makes it easy to find specialist hubs with rare content, with sharing limits that different user can obtain. Searching for files is O.K it gives you details of the file you find, but it does not yet have the powerful features of other programs like KaZaA and if you like very popular media most likely Direct Connect will not be very fast for you as amount of users is not massive like KaZaA but the community feel of the program does mean you can usually get all popular and rare content if you are slightly patient. The community feel of the hubs is the biggest plus for this program - its like when everyone was on Napster and the the hubs can be a great place to find information by using the chat feature.

In all, this is a well built program that's going to be here for years. If you like a community feel and rare content give Direct Connect a chance.

Now heres a little quick start on how to use the program. The info below shows how to connet to the Screaming Angels hub but it is the same process for other hubs.

Instruction to Connect to the DC SAv1 HUB

1. The first thing that is necessary to use the hub is the Direct Connect File-sharing program, this can be downloaded free by going to www.neo-modus.com, it is the first download on the web page, however you may want to download others lower on the page for Mac OS and also some selected add-on programs for DC.

2. Click on the downloaded DC program and install it to your computer. Once installed you can run the program by double-clicking the Direct Connect icon on your desktop, if you created one during installation or in "Start" > "Program Files"

3. To finish, once you have DC on simply go to the "Connect" tab and put in screamingangel.dyndns.org in the space at the bottom of the connect window and press "Connect", now you should be connected to the SAv1 HUB.

Please do share files you have with others and abide the rules of the hub. Any difficulties you have in connecting to the hub, then please go to the Screaming Angel forum and post a problem in the "DC SAv1 HUB Problem" board or e-mail me. The details of how to get to the forum or the SA e-mail can be found on the contact page of this website.
