Ever since I was in college, I wanted to do triathlons. I knew my biggest obstacle would be the swim. I had not had the opportunity to swim since I had taken a swimming class, back in elementary school years.

After I graduated with my Engineering degree, I moved to Lake Jackson.Having nothing better to do than to work, cycle and rest, I decided to teach myself how to swim, by observation. I could not even do a pool-length of 25 meters. But I insisted in mastering this athletic sport which seem to require much coordination.

My first triathlon had a 1k swim and it took me about 43 minutes, the swim part. (The sponsors did acknowledge that the swim course was a little long, by mistake.) I rode the bike without problems, 18 miles in 1 hour, maybe just a little slower than my regular bike rides. I walked part of the 8K run, about 1/2 mile, in 46 minutes.

My second triathlon was an 800 yard swim. And my third triathlon was 300 meter swim. That was not a very intelligent approach. But I knew I wanted to continue competing/participating in triathlons. (In the picture is my second River Cities Triathlon ... having fun.)

I finally improved my swimming to the point that I felt comfortable taking the challenge of a "Half-Ironman" triathlon. It was indeed the largest challenge. Even my cycling abilities were tested. I had never done a 55 mile bike ride non-stop. (I had done several century rides to this point but these rides usually included a short break around mile 35 and other breaks along as needed). Well, I completed the course with much satisfaction.

My time(s) in triathlons could improve but the focus has never been to race but to compete. Rather, I do triathlons like I do organized bike rides, simply focused on the thrill of participating, the excitment of the challenge and the satisfaction of having a good workout, swimming, cycling and/or running.
