"I can't think of anyone who'd want to hurt him." Mike said.
"Maybe it was that guy. Mr. Shalto-"
"Sholto." Mike said cutting Peter off. "It can't be him. He's in jail."
"Why don't we get something to eat. Might help us think." Micky sighed.
The three entered a resturant and noticed a woman talking on the phone.
Why does she look so familar? Mike wondered.
"I know I seen that woman before." Peter said snapping his fingers.
"So, you have found a partner. Is he any good? Second place isn't winning! There's only one winner! First! Oh stop crying! You're giving me a headache!" the woman yelled.
"Man she's mean." Micky said.
"I feel sorry for whoever she's talking to." Mike said shooting the woman a
dirty look.
Fern slammed the phone down causing Davy to jump.
"Nothing I do is ever good enough for that woman!" she yelled.
"Calm down." Davy said feeling scared.
"Do you know what it's like living with someone who no matter what you do, or how hard you try it's not good enough for them?"
"No." Davy admitted.
Fern sank into a chair and wept. "Why do I even try?"
"Because you want her approval. But why make yourself go through all this to get it?" Davy asked.
Fern brightened. "All that'll change when we do the talent show. And we'll win and do more shows. Mother'll see I have talent. She'll be so proud of me Davy! You'll see!"
I have to get out of here. Davy thought.
"You must be hungry. We're friends aren't we Davy?"
"NO!" Davy wanted to scream. But he was too scared. Fern was already on the edge as it was. He didn't want to push her completely off. So he just nodded.
To his shock Fern gave him a big hug and a kiss on his cheek.
Poor girl. She's lonely and has an overbearing Mother. Davy thought.
He actually felt sorry for her.
