Chapter 21

Upstairs, Mike, Peter and Davy looked at Jynger with a mixture of anger and fear. Micky got his breath back and pulled Elizabeth into his arms. Suddenly, Maggie appeared in front of Jynger's desk, still holding Darlene by the hair.

"What is this?" Jynger said with a little smile.

"That angel's mortal friend Darlene, madam." Maggie replied.

"Release her hair, Maggie." Jynger said mildly, "Let's not have any more unpleasantness."

Maggie reluctantly did as she was told, wondering why her boss was being so nice. Then she realized it was only for the benefit of the three Monkees.

"Why don't you stand against the wall behind them, dear." Jynger said, "While I finish my discussion with these gentlemen."

Darlene merely nodded and brushed past Peter as she walked behind him.

"There's nothing to discuss." Davy said. "We won't sign."

"This was all a setup so we'd sell our souls to Satan." Mike said accusingly, pointing a shaking finger at her. "The party, the food, the good times, all those promises...all arranged so we could be used to help Satan spread his evil."

"Not at all." Jynger denied, putting on her most seductive smile. This was her last chance to get them to sign and she knew it. "I meant everything I said. I'll still pay the four of you the one million dollars I promised. I can give it all to you right now if you want. You can have parties like the one you went to at my house every night! I promise every single record you make will sell millions! Every tour you go on will be sold out! You'll be bigger than the Beatles!"

"What profit would there be," Peter said very calmly, looking Jynger in the eye. "For one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?"

Jynger's eyes grew red and she raised her arms.

"Then you will die and gain nothing!" She shouted, sending a black bolt of lightning Peter. He was thrown off his feet and landed next to Darlene.

"Peter!" Davy and Mike shouted, horrified.

But to everyone's surprise, especially Jynger, Peter simply shook his head and with Darlene's help got back up on his feet!

"What the...you should be dead!" Jynger gasped.

"Looks like Elizabeth's angel pin did it again, you dumb witch." Darlene said with a smug smile. "Good thing I picked it up off the floor before coming here." She showed Peter the flap of his suit pocket where she had stuck the angel pin when she had brushed past him.

"So that means the pin isn't protecting you." Maggie said with an evil smile. She waved her hand and a cloud of black smoke surrounded Darlene. When it dissipated, Darlene had disappeared! By the door, Micky was cradling Elizabeth in his arms and gently patting her face, trying desperately to wake her, but the angel didn't stir.

"Elizabeth, wake up." He whispered. "We need your help, please!"

Then Micky remembered what he did at the pad after the Monkees had found Elizabeth on the beach. He bent down and kissed her.

"What did you do to Darlene?" Peter demanded of Maggie.

"Nothing too bad." Maggie replied. She bent down and picked something up off the floor. It was Darlene, now the size of a girl's doll! "But she'll need a whole new wardrobe. Now take off that pin and throw it out the window or out she goes out instead."

Peter pulled the pin off his jacket, walked a few feet, then tossed it out one of the windows.

"Very good, Maggie." Jynger said approvingly, "I'll take it from here. Goodbye, troublemakers." She raised her arms and sent a black bolt of lightning at the three Monkees... Only to have it absorbed by a white shield that suddenly appeared in front of them! The two witches looked over to see Elizabeth now standing erect, with Micky slightly behind, his hands on her shoulders. Her black dress was gone, replaced by a white one, her red hair now back to blonde and her whole body glowing with heavenly power.

"Troublemakers? That's very ironic coming from you, Jynger." Elizabeth said, raising her own hands. A purple ball of light formed between them.

"Stop right there, angel!" Maggie demanded. "You don't want anything bad happening to your friend, do you?" She held the doll- sized Darlene out in front of her.

Suddenly, Mike dove forward and smacked Maggie's hand, causing her to drop Darlene to the floor. With a strength several times stronger than a mortal woman, Maggie back-handed Mike, sending him crashing into Peter and making both fall to the floor. Maggie bent down to grab Darlene, but she had already rolled under Jynger's desk. Jumping over Mike and Peter, Davy pushed the bent-over Maggie into Jynger's desk, causing her to hit her head.

"OW!" Maggie shouted, straigtening up, "You little..."

Maggie got no further, because a white bolt from Elizabeth sent her flying backwards over Jynger's desk and into Jynger.

Both witches screamed and crashed to the floor.

"Your evil ends now, witches of Satan!" Elizabeth exclaimed, as the two witches painfully got to their feet, a look of pure hatred in their eyes.

"Go get 'em sweetheart." Micky smiled, kissing Elizabeth on the back of her neck.

Almost faster than the eye could see, Elizabeth shot the purple ball of light at Jynger and Maggie. It hit them and knocked them out of the broken windows. They tumbled head over heels for several feet, but the two witches didn't fall to the ground. They righted themselves and joined hands as they began to float back over to the office. Then they stopped and a huge fireball formed around them. Elizabeth's eyes grew wide.

"Everybody get down!" She shouted as Mike, Peter and Davy were looking for Darlene.

Everyone got down on the floor as the fireball left the two witches and hurtled toward the office. The angel had just enough time to throw a shield around everyone as the fireball tore through the office, smashing the inner wall between Maggie's desk and Jynger's office and setting everything on fire. Elizabeth sent out a cloud of white fog which extinguished the flames in the office-plus hid them temporarily from the witches.

"I'm going to send all of you downstairs to the foyer while take care of those two." The angel said.

"Wait, I can't find Darlene!" Peter exclaimed, frantically feeling around Jynger's desk .

Suddenly a burst of wind blew the fog away and the Monkees and the angel were forced backwards through the broken inner wall and into Maggie's outer office. The four Monkees found themselves near the stuffed Lion. The two witches landed near Jynger's upended desk.

"You'll have to do better than that, angel." Jynger sneered. She shot a red bolt of light at Elizabeth, which the angel deflected back at her. Jynger then released another bolt, this time a green one, but not at Elizabeth or the Monkees. This bolt hit the stuffed Lion nearby.

The Lion glowed green for a second, then stepped off its stand, growling at the four musicians.

"Meet the Lion that killed dear old Dad!" Jynger shouted. "Good thing he used the gun I had cursed, because he was planning to disown my sisters and me! Neither of my parents could understand the power of the dark side." She finished, shaking her head.

Elizabeth turned to deal with the Lion, when she was hit by a bolt from Jynger, knocking her backwards. Maggie bent down and once again picked up Darlene, who had been trying to hide behind the desk leg.

"Oh, there you are, sweetie." Maggie cooed, "Would you like to go for a swim?"

Darlene tried to pull Maggie's hands away but was unsuccessful.

Maggie took Darlene over to the aquarium. It was still upright, but pushed out of place from the wall. The piranha were swimming frantically inside.

The Lion growled and stalked after the Monkees. They slowly backed away from the angry animal, but realized they would soon be cornered.

Davy looked at the spears and shields on the wall and got an idea. "Grab those spears!" He shouted.

The four men grabbed them from the wall, plus the spears too, and held the items in front of themselves. The Lion grew more bold and began to swat at the shields they carried.

Elizabeth saw what Maggie was about to do and sent a white beam of light at Maggie, but it was blocked by Jynger. Maggie dropped Darlene into the Piranha tank.

The Lion was not slowing down its attack, and the Monkees realized they had to do something soon.

"One the count of three." Mike told his band mates, hefting his spear up to shoulder height.

The others nodded and when Mike counted to `three' the four Monkees threw their spears at the Lion. All four spears hit their mark and the Lion roared in rage. It tried to continue its attack, but it took only one more step before sinking to the floor, dead.

Elizabeth sent two different bolt at the witches. One hit Jynger and sent her flying out the window again, while the other sent Maggie against the broken wall. The angel ran over to the tank to grab Darlene, but Maggie grabbed her hand.

"C'mon, let's fight like mortals this time." Maggie said, "I'll bet you're not so tough when you don't use your angelic powers." She pushed Elizabeth away.

"Somebody get Darlene out of the tank!" Elizabeth shouted at the Monkees.

Maggie crouched down in a fighting stance, left arm straight out and another one bent back, as Peter rushed over to the tank.

"Let's go, Lizzie." Maggie sneered, "I'm a martial arts master. I know Karate, Tae Kwan Do, Judo, Akido..."

"Shut up and fight, Magnolia Karrel." Elizabeth said, copying Maggie's stance.

The witch glared at her. "Don't you call me that again!" She shouted.

"Why not?" The angel replied, eyes blazing, "That's your real name. You took the name Maggie Mae McDonald from the girl whose identity you stole so she'd go to the guillotine instead of you!"

"Oh yes, the French Revolution. Interesting time." Maggie smiled as she launched her foot at Elizabeth's head.

The angel ducked and swept her feet toward the witch's legs. Maggie jumped out of the way.

"Not bad, girl." Maggie laughed, "But you don't have a chance. I also know Jujitsu, Kung Fu..."

The witch got no further because Elizabeth sent a roundhouse kick to Maggie's stomach which sent her crashing against the broken wall.

"You may know those forms of fighting, Magnolia," Elizabeth said, "But do you know them well?"

In the aquarium, Darlene bobbed to the surface. Looking around, she saw the piranha swimming around, all the size of sharks to her. Fortunately, she knew how to swim and quietly began to make her way to the glass side, hoping the deadly fish would not see her. Darlene had only gone a few inches when her luck ran out. Several piranha saw the movement and swam toward her, sharp-toothed mouths wide open. Frantic, Darlene swam as fast as she could until she reached the glass side. She tried to climb up, but there was no way to grab onto the glass. The hungry fish were inches from her when a large hand splashed into the water, knocking the piranha way just long enough so another hand could reach down and snatch Darlene out of danger. She looked up at her rescuer and saw the smiling face of Peter.

"You're going to be safe now." He said softly as he cradled her in both hands. He placed Darlene against his chest and ran away from the tank.

Maggie had barely recovered from the kick when Elizabeth was on the offense again. The angel delivered a right cross, then a left, sending the witch back against the wall.

"Once again, you've overestimated your powers, Magnolia." She said. Her plan to get the witch so angry she'd get careless was working.

"Quit calling me that!" The witch screamed, "I am a Ninjutsu master!" She launched an attack with her hands and feet, but Elizabeth blocked every one.

"If you should brag, it should be about the Lord." The angel said calmly, "It's not too late to turn away from your evil."

"Never!" Maggie shouted back. "I'll defeat you! I know every form of fighting in the world!"

Elizabeth didn't respond. She just launched her own offensive of kicks and punches which knocked Maggie around the room. Right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot and a flying kick to the chest sent Maggie to the floor. The witch could only lift her head a little as the angel walked over.

"You may know your Kung Fu, Magnolia." Elizabeth said, "But I know fast and furious."

Maggie's eyes rolled up in her head as she passed out.
