Mr. Babbit

The guys arrived at the beach house.

Mr. Babbit: Right on time!

The guys get out.

Micky: Hi I'm Micky, this is Peter and Mike. Oh that other guy is Butch, he won't be living with us.

Mr.Babbit: I'm Mr. Babbit. So it'll just be the three of you ?

Micky: yes

Mr.Babbit: Well I'll show you around. (A little boy runs up, he is holding flower.)

Charlie: look, Daddy flowers.

Mr. Babbit: Yes thank you sweetheart, but don't pick anymore. (He takes them)

Charlie: Ours

Mr. Babbit: Not anymore. That's my youngest son Charlie, he's five. My daughter Audrey is here somewhere she's twelve. There she is. I'd introduce you to my son skip if I can find him, he's sixteen.

Audrey: He went to go brush his teeth.

Mr. Babbit: Again?!

Audrey: He said they felt dirty.

Mr. Babbit: I don't see how, he brushes them every five minutes. I'm surprised they don't glow in the dark.

He shows them all the rooms.

Peter: It's quite old

Mr. Babbit: It was my parents house, I was born and raised here. I wanted to raise my children here too, but my wife Yetta and I divorced four months ago. I could have sold it, but I'm sentimental. (He sees Skip) That's my son Skip. (To Skip) Did you take care of the guest house?

Skip: Audrey was suppose to.

Audrey: I can't do it dad, you know I have the curse.

Mr.Babbit: No, no I didn't, but thanks for sharing.

(He takes them out to the guest house.) This is the nicest feature. (To himself) I told that young lady to box up her things) well what do you say? $250.00 a month. Furniture included.

Butch takes them a side

Butch: I'd take it.

Micky: I don't know...

Peter: It beats living under your mother's roof. (

A shrill voice cuts in)

Yetta: Henry! Henry Babbit where are you?!

Mr. Babbit: Oy Vey!

(They followed him down.)

Yetta: I tried calling you.

Mr. Babbit: I had to show the place off.

Yetta: Really, Henry when I said you could have the kids this weekend, I didn't say you could make workhorses out of them!

Mr. Babbit: What work?!! Did you see them working? What was it like, 'cause I missed it.

Yetta: I'm here to pick them up anyway. I'm going to my mother's in New Hampshire for the rest of the summer. If a house is priced right we might move there. (Skip and Audrey get in the car.) Charlie let's go

Mr. Babbit: Give me a minute. (He holds Charlie)

Charlie: You're coming too. Right daddy?

Mr. Babbit: No Charlie, I'm not.

Charlie: (starting to cry) But why?

Mr. Babbit: Because I can't son.

Charlie (the tears pouring, he's rubbing His dad's face with his open hand.) Who's going to give me my bath and read to me at night?

Mr. Babbit: Your mom will

Charlie: Nooo that's not the same. I want to stay with you.

Mr. Babbit: You can't. (Charlie cried louder.) Shh, come Charlie, your mom's waiting. I'll see you again. Mr Babbit helped Charlie into the car.

Charlie: Daddy! ( he presses a flower into Mr. Babbit's hand. I love you.

Mr. Babbit: I love you too Charlie.

Charlie: Bye daddy.

(Yetta drove off, Mr. Babbit stood there a minute, then turned to them.) If you want it let me know $250.00 a month. He went up the stairs, to the guest house.

Peter: You can't go wrong on this place.

(Micky decided to take it, they went up stairs. Mr. Babbit was sitting on a sofa, boxing his daughter's things and crying. They turned around and went back down.)

Mike: We can call him too.

(At a nearby soda fountain)

Micky: Ok the rent is $250.00 a month, I bet the three of us could come up with it.

Peter: If we play some clubs, and do car washes on the side. That might work.

Micky: Great! Maybe, we can gather up all the girls we know; and they can throw a big yard and bake sale! (Peter fell silent.)

Mike: Come on Mick, He was only trying to help.

Micky: I'm sorry Pete, it's just that I want this so badly.

Peter: Maybe if you give him some money down...

Micky: That's a great idea. He'll hold it for me.

Mr. Babbit was in the guest house sitting at a dining room table. Micky was sitting across from him. Mr. Babbit was looking at some money, Micky had given him.

Mr. Babbit: You want me to hold it for $10.00? Oh boy, you must think I'm a real schmuck . Look it's $250.00 take it or leave it.

I'm having my doubts about you, if you can't pay this months, how are you going to pay the following months? Obviously you're not working.

Micky: No Sir. (The phone rings)

Mr.Babbit: Wait right there. (He answers the phone.) Hello? Yetta! What? How is it my fault? I'm not the one who, wanted the big bar mitzvah for Skip. I told you three years ago, it would break us. Don't you drag my mother into this. Look I got the young man here, that one that was here the other day, I'm hanging up now Yetta. Goodbye. No, I'm hanging up, bye bye.

(He hangs up the phone) Oy!! Now where were we? (The phone starts ringing) In spite of my doubts, I like you, don't ask me why. You'll come up with it.

(Micky takes his money back and leaves. He stands there on the stairs.

Mr. Babbit: (from inside) There is no right way to rub you! Stop putting words in my mouth Yetta! Please do not cry. I hate it when you cry. I didn't say I hated you. I said I hate when you cry.

Micky goes down and joins the others.

Micky: We're right back where we started.

Peter and Davy

Peter is sitting in an office, an English man is stamping papers.

Davy: I don't know Peter.

Peter: it's the least you could do, considering my parents took you in.

Davy stopped stamping

Davy: Peter it was high school. I was a foreign exchange student. Your brother stayed with my parents. You honestly didn't think the program was permanent?

Peter: Then I gotta do something.

Davy: What's that?

Peter: Gotta write to my brother and tell him, he can come home now.

(Davy rolled his eyes)

Davy: Even if I loaned him the money, how is he going to pay next months and the month after that?

Peter: Could you loan the money for them too?

Davy: $750.00?!! you're out of your bird! I'm sorry Peter I can't.

Peter left. Davy continued stamping.

Davy: Crazy as a loon he is.

Micky and Tammy are holding hands and walking.

Voice over: The part of Tammy Crandall will be played By Nancy Bradshaw, until further notice.

(Micky and Tammy stop and look around.)

Tammy: (smiling at Micky) Whatever.

Micky: I'm sunk.

Tammy: You'll get the money I have faith in you.

Micky: that's what they all say.

Meanwhile in a grocery store.

Micky's mother is finishing her purchases, Mr. Babbit is behind her.

Salesclerk: have a nice day Mrs. Dolenz.

Mr. Babbit: Hmm I think I got the perfect plan.

(Micky came into the house, he is discouraged.)

Micky: Hi Mom.

Janell: Micky call that number, that's on the counter.

Micky looks at the number, then calls it.

Mr. Babbit: (filtered) Mr. Dolenz, gather your friends, so we can sign the lease.

Micky: What about the money?

Mr.Babbit: Just come sign it.

Micky, Mike and Peter are sitting in their new place. The stereo is playing.

Peter: Wow I can't believe we got the place.

Mike: We knew you'd get it.

Micky: There is only one little hitch....

Micky's mother walks in.

Janell: You boys should turn off that stereo, go out and enjoy the beach.

Micky, Mike and Peter look into the camera

The Guys (in unison): Oy Vey!!!

Mike, Micky and Peter are on the bandstand. The footage is grainy

Micky and Peter sings vocals. Micky on drums, Peter on Bass and Mike playing guitar.

Mike: Well how can you kiss me

Turn around and walk away

You don't even miss me

And I know you're gonna say

The same things you've said to me

To another man

You don't know how it hurts me

When you tell me all those lies

I wish you'd just desert me

Instead of playing with my pride

I wish that you'd stop doing me

And I know you can

One day you'll know, love

That I am more than what you see

But now you don't know, love

You're only looking skin deep

I only wish that I could make you understand

So how can you kiss me

Turn around and walk away

You don't even miss me

And I know you're gonna say

The same things you've said to me

To another man

(Author's note the following interview, is pure fiction.)

They are sitting in director chairs.

Bob Raphelson: Nancy Bradshaw, thank you for stepping in at the last minute. Umm when You three met with Babbit at the house the first time, Teresa was suppose to be in that scene. She told me "No I can't." I thought she was quitting. So I told her you can't quit, until you complete this episode. She said "I'm not quitting, I'm having a baby." I asked her when, and she said "Right now!!"

Nancy: Oh No!

Bob Raphelson: Of course my partner Bert Schneider was spooked.

Bert: I'm standing there, and all I could say was "You're having a baby now?!!"

A technician calls out.

Technician: That was the hospital, it's a girl!

Bob Raphelson: Teresa had a girl.

Nancy: Awww.

Bob: So in closing, we'd like to congratulate Teresa and her husband Bobby Hart on the birth of their infant daughter. Such a blessing.

Technician: 8 lbs.

Mike: wow!!

Bert: If you're watching Teresa, we're coming up to see her.

Micky: We'll all go!!

(fade out, closing theme and credits.)
